And if we think them not enlightened enough, the remedy is not to take the power from them, but to inform them by education ~ ~ No man has a natural right to commit aggression on the equal rights of another, and this is all from which the laws ought to restrain him ~ ~ The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no god. It neither picks my pocket, nor breaks my leg ~ ~ A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt...If the game runs sometime against us at home, we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at stake ~ ~ History, in general, only informs us what bad government is ~ ~ History, in general, only informs us what bad government is ~ ~ The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions that I wish it to be always kept alive ~ ~ Information is the currency of democracy ~ ~ A bill of rights is what the people are entitled to against every government on earth, general or particular, and what no just government should refuse, or rest on inferences ~ ~ The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground ~ ~ The issue today is the same as it has been throughout all history, whether man shall be allowed to govern himself or be ruled by a small elite ~ Most Popular Topics:
