~ Ideally, advertising aims at the goal of a programmed harmony among all human impulses and aspirations and endeavors. Using handicraft methods, it stretches out toward the ultimate electronic goal of a collective consciousness. ~ ~ It takes a big idea to attract the attention of consumers and get them to buy your product. Unless your advertising contains a big idea, it will pass like a ship in the night. I doubt if more than one campaign in a hundred contains a big idea. ~ ~ Regardless of the moral issue, dishonesty in advertising has proved very unprofitable. ~ ~ You can fool all the people all the time if the advertising budget is big enough. ~ ~ There was a period of time in America where the advertising world actually went to the housewives of America and had them write jingles that would appeal to them. It was actually brilliant marketing. ~ ~ The very first law in advertising is to avoid the concrete promise and cultivate the delightfully vague. ~ ~ Great designers seldom make great advertising men, because they get overcome by the beauty of the picture - and forget that merchandise must be sold. ~ ~ Like the effect of advertising upon the customer, the methods of political propaganda tend to increase the feeling of insignificance of the individual voter. ~ ~ American grammar doesn't have the sturdiness of British grammar (a British advertising man with a proper education can make magazine copy for ribbed condoms sound like the Magna goddam Carta), but it has its own scruffy charm. ~ ~ Advertising may be described as the science of arresting the human intelligence long enough to get money from it. ~ ~ The critic is the only independent source of information. The rest is advertising. ~ ~ Advertising is of the very essence of democracy.
