~ Aesthetics is for the artist like ornithology is for the birds. ~  ~ Art is an invention of aesthetics, which in turn is an invention of philosophers.... What we call art is a game. ~ ~ It seems to me that aesthetics is an area of immense ethical failure. We have a thousand times more ecological consciousness than aesthetic consciousness and we have a hundred times more consciousness of the issues of social equity in the ownership and use of land. Yet, aesthetics has no parity with equity and with ecology, even though aesthetics, more than any aspect of the land ethic, feeds the spirit in direct ways. ~ ~ There's no particular evidence that any of the lower mammals or any of the other animals have any interest in aesthetics at all. But Homo sapiens does, always has and always will. ~ ~ Leonardo Da Vinci combined art and science and aesthetics and engineering, that kind of unity is needed once again. ~ ~ Nothing is beautiful, except man alone: all aesthetics rests upon this naïveté, which is its first truth. Let us immediately add the second: nothing is ugly except the degenerating man—and with this the realm of aesthetic judgment is circumscribed. ~ ~ Aesthetics happen. ~ ~ So begins a question which has of late become more and more urgent: what is the relation of aesthetics to politics? ~ ~ But aesthetics is not religion, and the origins of religion lie somewhere completely different. They lie anyway, these roses smell too sweet and the deep roar of the breaking waves is too splendid, to do justice to such weighty matters now. ~ ~ What is the use of aesthetics if they can neither teach how to produce beauty nor how to appreciate it in good taste? It exists because it behooves rational human beings to provide reasons for their actions and assessments. Even if aesthetics are not the mathematics of beauty, they are the proof of the calculation. ~
