~ A marriage...makes of two fractional
lives a whole;
it gives to two purposeless lives
a work, and doubles the strength
of each to perform it;
it gives to two
questioning natures
a reason for living,
and something to live for;
it will give a new gladness
to the sunshine,
a new fragrance to the flowers,
a new beauty to the earth,
and a new mystery to life. ~ ~ To keep your marriage brimming, with love in the wedding cup, whenever you're wrong, admit it; whenever you're right, shut up. ~ ~ If you can once engage people's pride, love, pity, ambition (or whatever is their prevailing passion) on your side, you need not fear what their reason can do against you. ~ ~ The passions grafted on wounded pride are the most inveterate; they are green and vigorous in old age. ~ ~ Pride is seldom delicate; it will please itself with very mean advantages. ~ ~ Pride thyself on what virtue thou hast, and not on thy parentage ~ ~ Let me give you a definition of ethics: It is good to maintain and further life it is bad to damage and destroy life. ~ ~ Let me give you the definition of ethics: it is good to maintain life and to further life. What happens if you put your reputation at risk . . . and lose the bet? ~ ~ It is curious - curious that physical courage should be so common in the world, and moral courage so rare ~ ~ When the historian of the Twentieth Century shall have finished his narrative, and comes searching for the subtitle which shall best express the spirit of the period, we think it not at all unlikely that he may select "The Age of Advertising" for the purpose. ~ ~ Frugality is one of the most beautiful and joyful words in the English language, and yet one that we are culturally cut off from understanding and enjoying. The consumption society has made us feel that happiness lies in having things, and has failed to teach us the happiness of not having things. ~ ~ Courage is fear that has said its prayers. ~ ~ Prayer is translation.
