~ Time is indeed the theater and seat of illusions; nothing is so ductile and elastic. The mind stretches an hour to a century, and dwarfs an age to an hour. ~ ~ Disillusion is a natural stage that follows the holding of an illusion. ~ ~ He who knows that this body s like froth, and has learnt that it is as unsubstantial as a mirage, will break the flower-pointed arrow of illusion, and never see the king of death. ~ ~ Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of readiness to die. ~ ~ Wave after wave of love flooded the stage and washed over me, the beginning of the one great durable romance of my life ~ ~ I quietly declare war with the State, after my fashion, though I will still make use and get advantage of her as I can, as is usual in such cases. ~ ~ Romances paint at full length people's wooings, but only give a bust of marriages: but no one cares for matrimonial cooings ~ ~ Love reckons hours for months, and days for years; and every little absence is an age. ~ ~ I'm not cynical about marriage or romance. I enjoyed being married. And although being single was fun for a while, there was always the risk of dating someone who'd owned a lunch box with my picture on it. ~ ~ Love is an ideal thing, marriage a real thing; a confusion of the real with the ideal never goes unpunished ~ ~ Love reckons hours for months, and das for years;
And every little absence is an age ~ ~ I now have absolute proof that smoking even one marijuana cigarette is equal in brain damage to being on Bikini Island during an H-bomb blast. ~ ~ Remember, always give your best. Never get discouraged. Never be petty. Always remember, others may hate you. But those who hate you don't win unless you hate them. And then you destroy yourself ~ ~ Let your language be a source of unity but not a separating tool ~ ~ In every adversity there lies the seed of an equivalent advantage. In every defeat is a lesson showing you how to win the victory next time ~ ~ When we least expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back. A week is more than enough time for us to decide whether or not to accept our destiny ~ ~ Champagne, if you are seeking the truth, is better than a lie detector. It encourages a man to be expansive, even reckless, while lie detectors are only a challenge to tell lies successfully ~ ~ The manager accepts the status quo; the leader challenges it ~ ~ Superstition, idolatry and hypocrisy have ample wages, but the truth goes begging. ~ ~ In the early stages of a pregnancy, the Government cannot intervene with a woman's right to choose. That is it, plain and simple. Guess what. We are not going to be big brother or sister, as the case may be. We are going to allow a woman, her doctor, and her God to make that decision ~ ~ We expect teachers to handle teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, and the failings of the family. Then we expect them to educate our children ~ ~ If the Plan B battle reveals anything, it's that the opponents' real agenda is not to prevent unintended pregnancy and abortion. If that were so, they would be for all forms of contraception. They'd be for better sex education. They'd be for more family-planning counseling. The problem is the right doesn't want greater access to birth control, ... and their opposition to Plan B proves it ~ ~ American children are the heaviest worldwide, and they are getting heavier at a faster rate than other children around the globe. This spread of obesity foreshadows an explosion in degenerative diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer waiting to erupt in our children's future. Together we can stop this tragedy from ever happening. ~ ~ There is no subject on which more dangerous nonsense is talked and thought than marriage. ~ ~ A lot of the fun lies in trying to penetrate the mystery; and this is best done by saying over the lines to yourself again and again, till they pass through the stage of sounding like nonsense, and finally return to a full sense that had at first escaped notice. ~ ~ Worry is a thin stream of fear trickling through the mind. If encouraged, it cuts a channel into which all other thoughts are drained ~ ~ I've yet to be on a campus where most women weren't worrying about some aspect of combining marriage, children, and a career. I've yet to find one where many men were worrying about the same thing ~ ~ Nerves and butterflies are fine - they're a physical sign that you're mentally ready and eager. You have to get the butterflies to fly in formation, that's the trick. ~ ~ Jazz is the folk music of the machine age ~ ~ There are people who are always anticipating trouble, and in this way they manage to enjoy many sorrows that never really happen to them ~ |
