~ Philosophy is written in this grand book - I mean the Universe - which stands continually open to our gaze, but it cannot be understood unless one first learns to comprehend the language and interpret the characters in which it is written. It is written in the language of mathematics, and its characters are triangles, circles and other geometrical figures, without which it is humanly impossible to understand a single word of it ~ ~ Procrastination is, hands down, our favorite form of self-sabotage. ~ ~ Abraham Lincoln did not go to Gettysburg having commissioned a poll to find out what would sell in Gettysburg. There were no people with percentages for him, cautioning him about this group or that group or what they found in exit polls a year earlier. When will we have the courage of Lincoln? ~ ~ There is one safeguard known generally to the wise, which is an advantage and security to all, but especially to democracies against despots -- suspicion ~ ~ Governing sense, mind and intellect, intent on liberation, free from desire, fear and anger, the sage is forever free ~ ~ Our government sprang from and was made for the people -- not the people for the government. To them it owes an allegiance; from them it must derive its courage, strength, and wisdom ~ ~ Our government sprang from and was made for the people -- not the people for the government. To them it owes an allegiance; from them it must derive its courage, strength, and wisdom ~ ~ Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys ~ ~ Our government has become too responsive to trivial or ephemeral concerns, often at the expense of more important concerns or an erosion of our liberty, and it has made policy priorities more dependent on where TV journalists happen to point their cameras.... As a nation we have lost our sense of tragedy, a recognition that bad things happen to good people. A nation that expects the government to prevent churches from burning, to control the price of bread or gasoline, to secure every job, and to find some villain for every dramatic accident, risks an even larger loss of life and liberty. ~ ~ Applause, mingled with boos and hisses, is about all that the average voter is able or willing to contribute to public life ~ ~ To what gulfs
A single deviation from the track
Of human duties leads even those who claim
The homage of mankind as their born due,
And find it, till they forfeit it themselves! ~ ~ If it were necessary to give the briefest possible definition of imperialism, we should have to say that imperialism is the monopoly stage of capitalism. ~ ~ Chili represents your three stages of matter: solid, liquid, and eventually gas ~ ~ It's bizarre that the produce manager is more important to my children's health than the pediatrician. ~ ~ Meditation is the tongue of the soul and the language of our spirit ~ ~ Meditation is not a way of making your mind quiet. It's a way of entering into the quiet that's already thereóburied under the 50,000 thoughts the average person thinks every day ~ ~ We live in an age when unnecessary things are our only necessities. ~ ~ I love luxury. And luxury lies not in richness and ornateness but in the absence of vulgarity. Vulgarity is the ugliest word in our language. I stay in the game to fight it. ~ ~ To me luxury is to be at home with my daughter, and the occasional massage doesn't hurt. ~ ~ For every age is fed on illusions, lest men should renounce life early, and the human race come to an end. ~ ~ Courage is the human virtue that counts most--courage to act on limited knowledge and insufficient evidence. That's all any of us have ~ ~ Leadership is the challenge to be something more than average ~ ~ The experienced mountain climber is not intimidated by a mountain -- he is inspired by it. The persistent winner is not discouraged by a problem -- he is challenged by it. Mountains are created to be conquered; adversities are designed to be defeated; problems are sent to be solved. It is better to master one mountain than a thousand foothills ~ ~ No language can express the power and beauty and heroism of a mother's love. ~ ~ Drag your thoughts away from your troubles... by the ears, by the heels, or any other way you can manage it. ~ ~ We can easily manage if we will only take, each day, the burden appointed to it. But the load will be too heavy for us if we carry yesterday's burden over again today, and then add the burden of the morrow before we are required to bear it. ~ ~ Let no feeling of discouragement prey upon you, and in the end you are sure to succeed. ~ ~ Zen in it's essence is the art of seeing into the nature of one's being, and it points the way from bondage to freedom ~ ~ Behavior is a mirror in which every one displays his own image ~ ~ Fear is the father of courage and the mother of safety ~ |
