~ Suicide is the punctuation mark at the end of many artistic careers ~ ~ To die in order to avoid the pains of poverty, love, or anything that is disagreeable, is not the part of a brave man, but of a coward. ~ ~ Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body. ~ ~ Painting and sculpture are very archaic forms. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of human civilization. ~ ~ Cultivators of the earth are the most valuable citizens. They are the most vigorous, the most independant, the most virtuous, and they are tied to their country and wedded to its liberty and interests by the most lasting bands. ~ ~ The art of being a good guest is to know when to leave. ~ ~ The moment you think you understand a great work of art, it's dead for you. ~ ~ Murder is unique in that it abolishes the party it injures, so that society has to take the place of the victim and on his behalf demand atonement or grant forgiveness; it is the one crime in which society has a direct interest. ~ ~ Art will remain the most astonishing activity of mankind born out of struggle between wisdom and madness, between dream and reality in our mind. ~ ~ When we say that trust is an emotional skill, this implies that emotional competence is a necessary part of trust. ~ ~ Let us remember that the Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide-open-heart that thinks of others first. ~ ~ A man who works with his hands is a laborer; a man who works with his hands and his brain is a craftsman; but a man who works with his hands and his brain and his heart is an artist. ~ ~ Only in the agony of parting do we look into the depths of love. ~ ~ Thanksgiving Day comes, by statute, once a year; to the honest man it comes as frequently as the heart of gratitude will allow. ~ ~ Remember God's bounty in the year. String the pearls of His favor. Hide the dark parts, except so far as they are breaking out in light! Give this one day to thanks, to joy, to gratitude! ~ ~ Thanksgiving Day is a jewel, to set in the hearts of honest men; but be careful that you do not take the day, and leave out the gratitude. ~ ~ Good leaders make people feel that they're at the very heart of things, not at the periphery. ~ ~ Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go. ~ ~ We shall not cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started... and know the place for the first time. ~ ~ We live in deeds, not years: In thoughts not breaths; In feelings, not in figures on a dial. We should count time by heart throbs. He most lives Who thinks most, feels the noblest, acts the best. ~ ~ The best friend of earth of man is the tree.
When we use the tree respectfully and economically,
we have one of the greatest resources on the earth. ~ ~ This life is yours. Take the power to choose what you want to do and do it well. Take the power to love what you want in life and love it honestly. Take the power to walk in the forest and be a part of nature. Take the power to control your own life. No one else can do it for you. Take the power to make your life happy. ~ ~ A crust eaten in peace is better than a banquet partaken in anxiety. ~ ~ He who cherishes a beautiful vision, a lofty ideal in his heart, will one day realize it. ~ ~ Art attests to what is inhuman in man. ~ ~ Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested: that is, some books are to be read only in parts, others to be read, but not curiously, and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention. ~ ~ Love has its own instinct, finding the way to the heart, as the feeblest insect finds the way to its flower, with a will which nothing can dismay nor turn aside. ~ |
