~ The difficult part in an argument is not to defend one's opinion, but rather to know it. ~ ~ I can win an argument on any topic, against any opponent. People know this, and steer clear of me at parties. Often, as a sign of their great respect, they don't even invite me. ~ ~ With reasonable men I will reason; with humane men I will plea; but to tyrants I will give no quarter, nor waste arguments where they will certainly be lost. ~ ~ The best way I know of to win an argument is to start by being in the right. ~ ~ The secret of success is to be in harmony with existence, to be always calm to let each wave of life wash us a little farther up the shore. ~ ~ The word "art" means harmony for me. I never speak of mathematics and never bother with the Spirit. My only science is the choice of impressions that the light in the universe furnishes to my consciousness as an artisan which I try, by imposing an Order, and Art, an appropriate representative life, to organize... ~ ~ Philosophers and aestheticians may offer elegant and profound definitions of art and beauty, but for the painter they are all summed up in the phrase: To create a harmony. ~ ~ The departure of our boys to foreign parts with the ever-present possibility that they might never return, taught the real value of photography to every father and mother. To many a mother the photograph of her boy in his country's uniform was the one never-failing consolation. ~ ~ To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place... I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them ~ ~ I take photographs with love, so I try to make them art objects. But I make them for myself first and foremost - that is important. ~ ~ Whether he is an artist or not, the photographer is a joyous sensualist, for the simple reason that the eye traffics in feelings, not in thoughts. ~ ~ Photography is more than a medium for factual communication of ideas. It is a creative art. ~ ~ Photography has the capacity to provide images of man and his environment that are both works of art and moments in history ~ ~ The virtue of the camera is not the power it has to transform the photographer into an artist, but the impulse it gives him to keep on looking. ~ ~ What I feel is that the picture-taking process, anyway a greater part of it, is an intuitive thing. You can't go out and logically plan a picture, but when you come back, reason then takes over and verifies or rejects whatever you've done. So that's why I say that reason and intuition are not in conflict--they strengthen each other. ~ ~ The use of the term art medium is, to say the least, misleading, for it is the artist that creates a work of art not the medium. It is the artist in photography that gives form to content by a distillation of ideas, thought, experience, insight and understanding. ~ ~ In my mind's eye, I visualize how a particular . . . sight and feeling will appear on a print. If it excites me, there is a good chance it will make a good photograph. It is an intuitive sense, an ability that comes from a lot of practice. ~ ~ The urge to create, the urge to photograph, comes in part from the deep desire to live with more integrity, to live more in peace with the world, and possibly to help others to do the same. ~ ~ Whatever we are waiting for - peace of mind, contentment, grace, the
inner awareness of simple abundance - it will surely come to us, but
only when we are ready to receive it with an open and grateful heart. ~ ~ There is enough for all. The earth is a generous mother; she will
provide in plentiful abundance food for all her children if they will but
cultivate her soil in justice and in peace. ~ ~ Whatever we are waiting for - peace of mind, contentment, grace, the
inner awareness of simple abundance - it will surely come to us, but
only when we are ready to receive it with an open and grateful heart ~ ~ We stop looking to manifest abundance; we are abundance. Even without a job. Even when you give away the majority of what you create. Even when there is no one but ourselves standing at the finish line to thank us for doing out part to help save the world. ~ ~ Well I think as designers we realize that design is a signal of intention
but it also has to occur within a world and we have to understand that world
in order to imbue our designs with inherent intelligence so when we look back
at the basic state of affairs in which we design we, in a way, need to go
to the primordial condition to understand the operating system and the frame conditions of the planet and the exiting part of that is the good news that's there because the news is the news of abundance and not the news of limits
and I think as our culture tortures itself now with tyrranies and concerns over limits and fear we can add this other dimension of abundance that is coherent driven by the sun and start to imagine what that would be like to share ~ ~ We already have so much abundance. We truly do. We need not search too far. It is within. The reason we fail to recognize this is because we haven't quite mastered the art of being. For abundance to prevail, we must have LOVE, gratitude, acceptance and compassion. ~ ~ When we give, we simply make room for more to come in. When we become deeply, authentically generous, it signals to our abundant universe that there is a conduit open to receive and distribute. We become part of the vital natural system. ~ ~ For neither man nor angel can discern Hypocrisy, the only evil that walks
Invisible, except to God alone, By his permissive will, through heav'n and earth. ~ ~ I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~ ~ It is utterly forbidden to be half-hearted about gardening. You have got to love your garden whether you like it or not. ~ ~ Let no one think that real gardening is a bucolic and meditative occupation. It is an insatiable passion, like everything else to which a man gives his heart ~ ~ The kiss of the sun for pardon, The song of the birds for mirth, One is nearer God's heart in a garden Than anywhere else on earth. ~ |
