~ Baseball is a man maker ~  ~ People who write about spring training not being necessary have never tried to throw a baseball ~ ~ Baseball hasn't been the national pastime for many years now - no sport is. The national pastime, like it or not, is watching television ~ ~ When I was a small boy in Kansas, a friend of mine and I went fishing.... I told him I wanted to be a real Major League Baseball Player, a genuine professional like Honus Wagner. My friend said that he'd like to be President of the United States. Neither of us got our wish. ~ ~ The other sports are just sports. Baseball is a love ~ ~ It baseball is an American institution and more lasting than some marriages, war, Supreme Court decisions and even major depressions ~ ~ Baseball is what gets inside you, it lights you up, its supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard everyone would do it. The HARD is what makes it great ~ ~ Love America and hate baseball? Hate America and love baseball? Neither is possible, except in the abstract ~ ~ I'd walk through hell in a gasoline suit to keep playing baseball ~ ~ Baseball is a lot like life. The line drives are caught, the squibbers go for base hits. It's an unfair game ~ ~ The guy with the biggest stomach will be the first to take off his shirt at a baseball game ~ ~ With those who don't give a damn about baseball I can only sympathize. I do not resent them. I am even willing to concede that many of them are physically clean, good to their mothers and in favor of world peace. But while the game is on, I can't think of anything to say to them ~  |
