~ Youth is a time when we find the books we give up but do not get over. ~ ~ Throw away those books and cassettes on inspirational leadership. Send those consultants packing. Know your job, set a good example for the people under you and put results over politics. That's all the charisma you'll really need to succeed. ~ ~ We know nothing about motivation. All we can do is write books about it. ~ ~ What does labor want? We want more schoolhouses and less jails; more books and less arsenals; more learning and less vice; more leisure and less greed; more justice and less revenge; in fact, more of the opportunities to cultivate our better natures ~ ~ The failure to read good books both enfeebles the vision and strengthens our most fatal tendency-- the belief that the here and now is all there is. ~ ~ You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Everybody must love something, and I know of no objects of love that give such substantial and unfailing returns as books and a garden. ~ ~ Must we always teach our children with books? Let them look at the stars and the mountains above. Let them look at the waters and the trees and flowers on Earth. Then they will begin to think, and to think is the beginning of a real education. ~ ~ With a few flowers in my garden, half a dozen pictures and some books, I live without envy. ~ ~ Plant trees. They give us two of the most crucial elements for our survival: oxygen and books. ~ ~ You will find something more in woods than in books. Trees and stones will teach that which you can never learn from masters. ~ ~ In the very books in which philosophers bid us scorn fame, they inscribe their names ~ ~ Anyone who eats thee meals a day should understand why cookbooks outsell sex books three to one. ~ ~ Real meditation we get from within or from a spiritual Master. We can never get it from books. From books we can get inspiration or an inner approach to the fulfilment of our outer life. But in order to have true meditation we have to go deep within or follow the guidance of a spiritual Master ~ ~ Seek truth in meditation, not in moldy books. Look in the sky to find the moon, not in the pond ~ ~ Artists use frauds to make human beings seem more wonderful than they really are. Dancers show us human beings who move much more gracefully than human beings really move. Films and books and plays show us people talking much more entertainingly than people. ~ ~ Bookstores see a book by a woman and they put it in the romance section. ~ ~ Good friends, good books and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life. ~ ~ Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in springtime. ~ ~ I am a writer of books in retrospect. I talk in order to understand; I teach in order to learn. ~ ~ He who studies medicine without books sails an uncharted sea, but he who studies medicine without patients does not go to sea at all. ~ ~ The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame. ~ ~ Censorship ends in logical completeness when nobody is allowed to read any books except the books that nobody reads. ~ ~ Believe one who knows; you will find something greater in woods than in books.
