~ The preservation of a few samples of undeveloped territory is one of the most clamant issues before us today. Just a few more years of hesitation and the only trace of that wilderness which has exerted such a fundamental influence in molding American character will lie in the musty pages of pioneer books ... To avoid this catastrophe demands immediate action. ~ ~ I have a low opinion of books; they are but piles of stones set up to show travelers where other minds have been, or at best smoke signals to call attention... One day's exposure to mountains is better than a cart load of books. ~ ~ Something will have gone out of us as a people if we ever let the remaining wilderness be destroyed; if we permit the last virgin forests to be turned into comic books and plastic cigarette cases; if we drive the few remaining members of the wild species into zoos or to extinction; if we pollute the last clean air and dirty the last clean streams and push our paved roads through the last of the silence, so that never again will Americans be free in their own country from the noise, the exhausts, the stinks of human and automotive waste. ~ ~ We must go beyond textbooks, go out into the bypaths and intruded depths of the wilderness and travel and explore and tell the world the glories of our journey. ~ ~ I love everything thats old: old friends, old times, old manners, old books, old wines. ~ ~ Most people don't have the money to spend on advertising to create awareness among readers, nor do they have the contacts at newspapers or magazines to get their books reviewed. ~ ~ Some people act as though art that is for a mass audience is not good art, and I think this has been a very negative thing. I know that I have wanted very much to write books that are accessible to the widest audience possible. ~ ~ I feel a kind of reverence for the first books of young authors. There is so much aspiration in them, so much audacious hope and trembling fear, so much of the heart's history, that all errors and shortcomings are for a while lost sight of in the amiable self assertion of youth. ~ ~ The book salesman should be honored because he brings to our attention, as a rule, the very books we need most and neglect most. ~ ~ I would like to read some books: I don't have time; I would like to continue working on my autobiography. ~ ~ We used to root for the Indians against the cavalry, because we didn't think it was fair in the history books that when the cavalry won it was a great victory, and when the Indians won it was a massacre. ~ ~ We used to root for the Indians against the cavalry, because we didn't think it was fair in the history books that when the cavalry won it was a great victory, and when the Indians won it was a massacre. ~ ~ The biggest seller is cookbooks and the second is diet books - how not to eat what you've just learned how to cook. ~ ~ Books themselves need no defense. Their spokesmen come and go, their readers live and die, they remain constant. ~ ~ If the fires of freedom and civil liberties burn low in other lands, they must be made brighter in our own. If in other lands the press and books and literature of all kinds are censored, we must redouble our efforts here to keep them free. ~ ~ England has two books, one which she has made and one which has made her: Shakespeare and the Bible. ~ ~ You will find something more in woods than in books. Trees and stones will teach you that which you can never learn from masters. ~ ~ Men need rule books. Women want men to intuit what they want. And only about 2% of men can do that, and most of them are not heterosexual. ~ ~ There are relatively few science fiction or fantasy books with the main character being an old person. ~ ~ The success of many books is due to the affinity between the mediocrity of the author's ideas and those of the public. ~ ~ If my books had been any worse, I should not have been invited to Hollywood, and if they had been any better, I should not have come. ~ ~ In the dark colony of night, when I consider man's magnificent capacity for malice, madness, folly, envy, rage, and destructiveness, and I wonder whether we shall not end up as breakfast for newts and polyps, I seem to hear the muffled cries of all the words in all the books with covers closed. ~ ~ One would imagine that books were, like women, the worse for being old that they open their leaves more cordially that the spirit of enjoyment wears out with the spirit of novelty and that after a certain age, it is high time to put them on the s. ~ ~ The mortality of all inanimate things is terrible to me, but that of books most of all. ~ ~ There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island. ~ ~ In spite of the six thousand manuals on child raising in the bookstores, child raising is still a dark continent and no one really knows anything.
