Both are wrong. ~ ~ Without books the development of civilization would have been impossible. They are the engines of change, windows on the world, "Lighthouses" as the poet said "erected in the sea of time." They are companions, teachers, magicians, bankers of the treasures of the mind, Books are humanity in print. ~ ~ People change and forget to tell each other. ~ ~ The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change. ~ ~ Only in growth, reform, and change, paradoxically enough, is true security to be found. ~ ~ Single acts of tyranny may be ascribed to the accidental opinion of a day; but a series of oppressions, begun at a distinguished period and pursued unalterably through every change of ministers, too plainly prove a deliberate, systematic plan of reducing [a people] to slavery. ~ ~ Every man may reign secure in his petty tyranny, and spread terror and desolation around him, until the trump of the Archangel shall excite different emotions in his soul. ~ ~ And I think being a good director is being able to be completely tyrannical and you?ve got to be an absolute dictator while at the same time, you have to listen and see everything because it can all change on a dime. ~ ~ The most dangerous man, to any government, is the man who Is able to think things out for himself, without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Do this often. Just be for a while, even for only a moment. It can change everything. ~ ~ A living thing is distinguished from a dead thing by the multiplicity of the changes at any moment taking place in it. ~ ~ The earth was made so various, that the mind Of desultory man, studious of change, And pleased with novelty, might be indulged. ~ ~ Politics ... regarded as the study and pursuit of the true, enduring good of a community, as the application of great and unchangeable principles to public affairs, is a noble sphere of thought and action; but politics, in its common sense, or considered as the invention of temporary shifts, as the playing of a subtle game, as the tactics of party for gaining power and the spoils of office, and for elevating one set of men above another, is a paltry and debasing concern. ~ ~ Sophistication knows the score, but is powerless to change it. ~ ~ Skepticism has never founded empires, established principals, or changed the world's heart. The great doers in history have always been people of faith. ~ ~ The choice to elevate a much younger man might signal not so much an impatience with the current pace of development, but a willingness to make more substantive changes. ~ ~ As we grow older together, As we continue to change with age, There is one thing that will never change. . .
