~ Personally, I'm in favor of democracy, which means that the central institutions of society have to be under popular control. Now, under capitalism, we can't have democracy by definition. Capitalism is a system in which the central institutions of society are in principle under autocratic control. Thus, a corporation or an industry is, if we were to think of it in political terms, fascist; that is, it has tight control at the top and strict obedience has to be establishedat every level--there's little bargaining, a little give and take, but the line of authority is perfectly straightforward. Just as I'm opposed to political fascism, I'm opposed to economic fascism. I think that until the major institutions of society are under the popular control of participants and communities, it's pointless to talk about democracy. ~ ~ Congress is functioning the way the Founding Fathers intended-not very well. They understood that if you move too quickly, our democracy will be less responsible to the majority ~ ~ Information is the currency of democracy ~ ~ It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried ~ ~ Democracy gives every man the right to be his own oppressor ~ ~ It's not the voting that's democracy; it's the counting ~ ~ Democracy becomes a government of bullies tempered by editors ~ ~ If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer. ~ ~ t’s hard to believe that in the greatest democracy in the world, we need legislation to prevent the government from writing and paying for the news. ~ ~ Democracy becomes a government of bullies tempered by editors. ~ ~ We’re busy exporting Democracy abroad to Afghanistan and Iraq, which is fine, but what we really need to do is a better job at making our Democracy work right here at home. ~ ~ Sri Lanka's problems were caused by too much democracy. ~ ~ My own ideals for the university are those of a genuine democracy and serious scholarship. These two, indeed, seem to go together. ~ ~ Democracy is the process by which people choose the man who'll get the blame. ~ ~ America has never seen itself as a national state like all others, but rather as an experiment in human freedom and democracy. ~ ~ Tradition may be defined as an extension of the franchise. Tradition means giving votes to the most obscure of all classes, our ancestors. It is the democracy of the dead. ~ ~ Bureaucracy is not an obstacle to democracy but an inevitable complement to it. ~ ~ Sometimes democracy must be bathed in blood. ~ ~ Adultery is the application of democracy to love ~ ~ The Greeks... labored under the delusion that their democracy was a guarantee of peace and plenty, not realizing that unrestrained majority rule always destroys freedom, puts the minority at the mercy of the mob, and works at cross-purposes to the effective use of human energy and individual initiative ~ ~ Without God, democracy will not and cannot long endure. ~ ~ “In liberal democracy and anxious anarchy, the traditional classic dance, compact of aristocratic authority and absolute freedom in a necessity of order, has never been so promising as an independent expression as it is today.” ~ ~ Free speech is too dangerous to a democracy to be permitted. ~ ~ An editor is the uncrowned king of an educated democracy. ~ ~ Democracy consists of choosing your dictators, after they've told you what you think it is you want to hear. ~ ~ The capacity to combine commitment with skepticism is essential to democracy. ~ ~ Freedom of expression - in particular, freedom of the press - guarantees popular participation in the decisions and actions of government, and popular participation is the essence of our democracy. ~ ~ Democracy... while it lasts is more bloody than either aristocracy or monarchy. Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There is never a democracy that did not commit suicide. ~ ~ Some areas that spring to mind are agriculture, democracy building, disaster relief, education, and science and technology. ~ ~ The most effective way to restrict democracy is to transfer decision-making from the public arena to unaccountable institutions: kings and princes, priestly castes, military juntas, party dictatorships, or modern corporations. ~ |
