~ No game in the world is as tidy and dramatically neat as baseball, with cause and effect, crime and punishment, motive and result, so cleanly defined ~ ~ Our government has become too responsive to trivial or ephemeral concerns, often at the expense of more important concerns or an erosion of our liberty, and it has made policy priorities more dependent on where TV journalists happen to point their cameras.... As a nation we have lost our sense of tragedy, a recognition that bad things happen to good people. A nation that expects the government to prevent churches from burning, to control the price of bread or gasoline, to secure every job, and to find some villain for every dramatic accident, risks an even larger loss of life and liberty. ~ ~ Life is like an overlong drama through which we sit being nagged by the vague memories of having read the reviews. ~ ~ Exaggeration of every kind is as essential to journalism as it is to dramatic art, for the object of journalism is to make events go as far as possible ~ ~ History is not melodrama, even if it usually reads like that. ~ ~ This has been a time of dramatic transformation, and you have risen to every new challenge ~ ~ This clearly shows that through the mid-'90s we have a dramatic drop in the teen pregnancy rate ... and that's very important. But we have to put that in the context of where we were to begin with, which is that we have one of the highest teen pregnancy rates of all industrialized countries ~ ~ Most drama in our lives is really rather squalid. ~ ~ Drama is like life with the dull bits cut out. ~ ~ War is the supreme drama of a completely mechanized society. ~ ~ A passion for the dramatic art is inherent in the nature of man. ~ ~ I made mistakes in drama. I thought drama was when actors cried. But drama is when the audience cries. ~ ~ Drama is something people go through everyday. Change of character is nothing more than mood swings. ~ ~ A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day. ~ ~ Drama is theater, life, an escape from life, happiness, and sadness all rolled into one. ~ ~ Without a measureless and perpetual uncertainty, the drama of human life would be destroyed. ~ ~ The drama is the book of the people. ~ ~ Drama is action, sir, action and not confounded philosophy. ~ ~ The level of shyness has gone up dramatically in the last decade. I think shyness is an index of social pathology rather than a pathology of the individual. ~ ~ When [actors] are talking, they are servants of the dramatist. It is what they can show the audience when they are not talking that reveals the fine actor. ~ ~ I made mistakes in drama. I thought drama was when actors cried. But drama is when the audience cries. ~ ~ My poor sight gives me an advantage. I can't see the people in the audience who are scratching their heads while I am lost in my role and giving everything I have to the drama. ~ ~ I try to bring the audience's own drama - tears and laughter they know about - to them. ~ ~ By whatever means it is accomplished, the prime business of a play is to arouse the passions of its audience so that by the route of passion may be opened up new relationships between a man and men, and between men and Man. Drama is akin to the other ~ ~ Compare the cinema with theatre. Both are dramatic arts. Theatre brings actors before a public and every night during the season they re-enact the same drama. Deep in the nature of theatre is a sense of ritual. The cinema, by contrast, transports its audience individually, singly, out of the theatre towards the unknown. ~ ~ I try to bring the audience's own drama - tears and laughter they know about - to them. ~ ~ What does it feel like to be a parent? What does it feel like to be a child? And that's what stories do. They bring you there. They offer a dramatic explanation, which is always different from an expository explanation. ~ ~ The theatre is supremely fitted to say: Behold! These things are. Yet most dramatists employ it to say: This moral truth can be learned from beholding this action. ~ ~ You can think of Hollywood as high school. TV actors are freshmen, comedy actors are maybe juniors, and dramatic actors - they're the cool seniors. ~ ~ I'm obsessive about the kind of melodrama of getting through the days and trying to make them good and funny and a happy experience. But my feeling towards the fans is that they delivered me from darkness. ~ |
