~ The snake stood up for evil in the Garden. ~ ~ A nickname is the hardest stone that the devil can throw at a man. ~ ~ Work is a necessary evil to be avoided. ~ ~ Work is the source of nearly all the misery in the world. Almost any evil you'd care to name comes from working or from living in a world designed for work. In order to stop suffering, we have to stop working. ~ ~ When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading. ~ ~ A vain man finds his account in speaking good or evil of himself. ~ ~ Money doesn't mind if we say it's evil, it goes from strength to strength. It's a fiction, an addiction, and a tacit conspiracy. ~ ~ Gossip is the Devil's radio. ~ ~ Gossip needn't be false to be evil - there's a lot of truth that shouldn't be passed around. ~ ~ Taxes are not good things, but if you want services, somebody's got to pay for them so they're a necessary evil. ~ ~ Non-cooperation with evil is as much a duty as is cooperation with good. ~ ~ Non-cooperation with evil is as much a duty as is cooperation with good. ~ ~ Words -- so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them. ~ ~ Sin hath the devil for its father, shame for its companion, and death for its wages ~ ~ To sit in judgment of those things which you perceive to be wrong or imperfect is to be one more person who is part of judgment, evil or imperfection. ~ ~ As to the evil which results from a censorship, it is impossible to measure it, for it is impossible to tell where it ends. ~ ~ The best philanthropy is constantly in search of the finalities—a search for a cause, an attempt to cure evils at their source. ~ ~ A Californian who I had recently the pleasure of meeting observed that if the philosophers had lived among your mountains, their systems would have been different from what they are. Certainly very different from what those systems are which the European genteel tradition has handed down since Socrates; for these systems are egotistical; directly or indirectly they are anthropocentric, and inspired by the conceited notion the man, or human reason, or the human distinction between good and evil, is the center and pivot of the universe. That is what the mountains and the woods should make you at last ashamed to assert. ~ ~ There is a devil in every berry of the grape. ~ ~ Poetry is devil's wine. ~ ~ It may be necessary temporarily to accept a lesser evil, but one must never label a necessary evil as good. ~ ~ Shall I tell you what the real evil is? To cringe to the things that are called evils, to surrender to them our freedom, in defiance of which we ought to face any suffering. ~ ~ Evil is unspectacular and always human,
And shares our bed and eats at our own table. ~ ~ Witchcraft is not evil. At least not any more than lighting a votive candle, praying for a sick friend, or carrying a lucky charm is. However, there are some who do view witchcraft as evil. This is only because organized religion (primarily the Christian church) has conditioned them to fear anything which strays from their narrow condemning view. After all, if you have the ability to fend for yourself, solve your own problems, and choose your own method of spiritual expression, why would you need the confined structure of a church? ~ ~ Witchcraft, like any science or philosophical system, must be approached from a liberal point of view. When looked at objectively, we see that Witchcraft is just another theoretical body of knowledge. It is a process, not a person. Therefore it is neutral, incapable of being either good or evil. Like all belief systems, Witchcraft is only as good or evil as the people using it. ~ ~ With evil omens from the harbour sails The ill-fated ship that worthless Arnold bears; God of the southern winds, call up thy gales, And whistle in rude fury round his ears. ~ ~ The ostensible supporters of the Constitution, like the ostensible supporters of most other governments, are made up of three classes, viz.: 1. Knaves, a numerous and active class, who see in the government an instrument which they can use for their own aggrandizement or wealth. 2. Dupesa large class, no doubteach of whom, because he is allowed one voice out of millions in deciding what he may do with his own person and his own property, and because he is permitted to have the same voice in robbing, enslaving, and murdering others, that others have in robbing, enslaving, and murdering himself, is stupid enough to imagine that he is a free man, a sovereign; that this is a free government; a government of equal rights, the best government on earth, and such like absurdities. 3. A class who have some appreciation of the evils of government, but either do not see how to get rid of them, or do not choose to so far sacrifice their private interests as to give themselves seriously and earnestly to the work of making a change. ~ ~ He says NO! in thunder; but the Devil himself cannot make him say yes. ~ ~ Simplicity is a pleasant thing in children, or at any age, but it is not necessarily admirable, nor is affectation altogether a thing of evil. To be normal, to be at home in the world, with a prospect of power, usefulness, or success, the person must have that imaginative insight into other minds that underlies tact and savoir-faire, morality and beneficence. This insight involves sophistication, some understanding and sharing of the clandestine impulses of human nature. A simplicity that is merely the lack of this insight indicates a sort of defect. ~ ~ The growth of drug-related crime is a far greater evil to society as a whole than drug taking. Even so, because we have been seduced by the idea that governments should legislate for our own good, very few people can see how dangerously absurd the present policy is. ~ |
