~ My father was a tremendous extrovert, always managing to be the center of attention and the life of the party. Mom was just the opposite - quiet, suffering, and neurotic as Hell. Quite a combination, those two. Dad was a terrific ham and Mom was very introverted, and basically sad and self-conscious. ~ ~ I would like to emphasize here, on Al-Arabiya TV, that I place Sheik Osama on the same level as my father, and I love him perhaps even more than my father. ~ ~ My other brother, the Lord Lucas, who was heir to my father's estate, and as it were the father to take care of us all, is not less valiant than they were, although his skill in the discipline of war was not so much, not being bred therein. ~ ~ Our Founding Fathers would shudder to see how easily forces outside the mainstream now seem to effortlessly push some Senate leaders toward conduct the American people don't want from their elected leaders: Abusing power. Inserting the government into our private lives. Injecting religion into debates about public policy. Jumping through hoops to ingratiate themselves to their partys base, while step by step, day by day, real problems that keep American families up at night fall by the wayside here in Washington. ~ ~ ... evening. I have just returned from St. Germain. Everything is settled--with more slyness on my part. I begin to think I am a born Jesuit; there must have been some detestable sympathy between Father Benwell ... ~ ~ Before he can devote himself to God or a woman, a boy will devote himself to his father, even foolishly, even beyond explanation. ~ ~ My father used to say superior people never make long visits. ~ ~ By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he's wrong.
~ ~ Children always know when company is in the living room - they can hear their mother laughing at their father's jokes ~ ~ A king, realizing his incompetence, can either delegate or abdicate his duties. A father can do neither. If only sons could see the paradox, they would understand the dilemma. ~ ~ The father of a daughter is nothing but a high-class hostage. A father turns a stony face to his sons, berates them, shakes his antlers, paws the ground, snorts, runs them off into the underbrush, but when his daughter puts her arm over his shoulder and says, 'Daddy, I need to ask you something,' he is a pat of butter in a hot frying pan. ~ ~ Necessity may be the mother of invention, but play is certainly the father. ~ ~ If necessity is the mother of invention, it's the father of cooperation. And we're cooperating like never before. ~ ~ Sin hath the devil for its father, shame for its companion, and death for its wages ~ ~ When we say a woman is of a certain social class, we really mean her husband or father is. ~ ~ Fathers send their sons to college either because they went to college or they didn’t. ~ ~ Is not the sky a father and the earth a mother, and are not all living things with feet or wings or roots their children? ~ ~ Thy wish was father, Harry, to that thought ~ ~ It-was a tiny mollusc that caused Walter, grandfather of the greatest biologist of the twentieth century, to forge a brief link with the greatest biologist of the nineteenth: Charles Darwin. . . . . . We know this because later that day he wrote hesitantly to Darwin to report what he had found. ~ ~ I seem to keep returning to my father in poems because his personality was so extreme, so driven. He did everything to excess. ~ ~ We live longer than our forefathers; but we suffer more from a thousand artificial anxieties and cares. They fatigued only the muscles, we exhaust the finer strength of the nerves. ~ ~ A son should inherit his father's money - not his religion; he may be too lazy to build upon a new fortune but never too slow to catch up with a new creed. ~ ~ A great part of the pleasure of travel lies in the fulfillment of early wishes to escape the family and especially the father ~ ~ Our Founding Fathers would shudder to see how easily forces outside the mainstream now seem to effortlessly push some Senate leaders toward conduct the American people don't want from their elected leaders: Abusing power. Inserting the government into our private lives. Injecting religion into debates about public policy. Jumping through hoops to ingratiate themselves to their partys base, while step by step, day by day, real problems that keep American families up at night fall by the wayside here in Washington. ~ ~ Dad never had time to relax. When we were young, he`d get us off to school before he`d go to work as a controller for a nine-hour day, come home, make dinner, make sure we got our homework done, then go right to sleep and do it all over again the next morning. - Chad says of his father`s hectic work and family juggling act. ~ ~ The wish is the father of the deed. ~ ~ I remember distinctly telling my father-in-law, barring a miracle, we're going to have to terminate the pregnancy.
