~ What I am proud of, what seems so simply clear, is that feminism is a way to fight for justice, always in short supply. ~  ~ Feminism is the radical notion that women are people. ~ ~ When it defines man as the enemy, feminism is alienating women from their own bodies. ~ ~ Feminism is an entire world view or gestalt, not just a laundry list of women’s issues. ~ ~ Feminism directly confronts the idea that one person or set of people [has] the right to impose definitions of reality on others. ~ ~ Like Broadway, the novel, and God, feminism has been declared dead many times. ~ ~ I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat. ~ ~ Feminism was recognized by the average man as a conflict in which it was impossible for a man, as a chivalrous gentleman ... as a highly evolved citizen of a highly civilized community, to refuse the claim of this better half to self-determination. ~ ~ Although feminism speaks the language of liberation, self-fulfillment, options, and the removal of barriers, these phrases invariably mean their opposites and disguise an agenda at variance with the ideals of a free society. ~ ~ We need a new kind of feminism, one that stresses personal responsibility and is open to art and sex in all their dark, unconsoling mysteries. ~ ~ Feminism has led the way in demystifying personal relations, forcefully insisting they are political to the core. ~ ~ I hate discussions of feminism that end up with who does the dishes ... at the end, there are always the damned dishes. ~ |
