to-day that a picked-up dinner must serve ~ ~ Tis not the food, but the content, That makes the table's merriment. ~ ~ If a man earnestly seeks a righteous life, his first act of abstinence is from animal food. ~ ~ Two years ago we thought genetically engineered foods would be the next big thing. Now even biotech companies are beginning to wonder if consumers will accept these foods. ~ ~ I love dogs. They live in the moment and don't care about anything except affection and food. They're loyal and happy. The earth is a generous mother; she will provide in plentiful abundance food for all her children if they will but cultivate her soil in justice and in peace. ~ ~ If we do not permit the earth to produce beauty and joy, it will in the end not produce food, either. ~ ~ The ease with which barley may be substituted directly for wheat in human food and its usefulness to replace wheat milling by-products as feed in the production of the milk supply render its abundant production important ~ ~ The usefulness of cow-peas and soy-beans as human food has been recognized only recently in this country ~ ~ But there is another strong objection which I, one of the laziest of all the children of Adam, have against the Leisure State. Those who think it could be done argue that a vast machinery using electricity, water-power, petrol, and so on, might reduce the work imposed on each of us to a minimum. It might, but it would also reduce our control to a minimum. We should ourselves become parts of a machine, even if the machine only used those parts once a week. The machine would be our master, for the machine would produce our food, and most of us could have no notion of how it was really being produced ~ ~ Communism and socialism is [sic] seductive. It promises us that people will contribute according to ability and receive according to needs. Everybody is equal. Everybody has a right to decent housing, decent food and affordable medical care. History should have taught us that when we hear people talk this stuff--Watchout! ~ ~ root, a stem, a leaf, some means of capturing sunlight and air and making food -- in some, a plant. The green substance of the earth, the chlorophyll, is all summed up in the plants. Without them we perish, all of us who are flesh and blood ~ ~ Land, then, is not merely soil; it is a fountain of energy flowing through a circuit of soils, plants, and animals. Food chains are the living channels which conduct energy upward; death and decay return it to the soil. The circuit is not closed; some energy is dissipated in decay, some is added by absorption from the air, some is stored in soils, peats, and long-lived forests; but it is a sustained circuit, like a slowly augmented revolving fund of life. ~ ~ Wilderness is a necessity ... They will see what I meant in time. There must be places for human beings to satisfy their souls. Food and drink is not all. There is the spiritual. In some it is only a germ, of course, but the germ will grow. ~ ~ Simplicity in all things is the secret of the wilderness and one of its most valuable lessons. It is what we leave behind that is important. I think the matter of simplicity goes further than just food, equipment, and unnecessary gadgets; it goes into the matter of thoughts and objectives as well. When in the wilds, we must not carry our problems with us or the joy is lost. ~ ~ As we watch the sun go down, evening after evening, through the smog across the poisoned watchers of our native earth, we must ask ourselves seriously whether we really wish some future universal historian on another planet to say about us: "With all their genius and with all their skill, they ran out of foresight and air and food and water and ideas," or, "They went on playing politics until their world collapsed around them." ~ ~ One farmer says to me, You cannot live on vegetable food solely, for it furnishes nothing to make the bones with; and so he religiously devotes a part of his day to supplying himself with the raw material of bones; walking all the while he talks behind his oxen, which, with vegetable-made bones, jerk him and his lumbering plow along in spite of every obstacle ~ ~ Most vegetarians I ever see looked enough like their food to be classified as cannibals ~ ~ Before I was born my mother was in great agony of spirit and in a tragic situation. She could take no food except iced oysters and champagne. If people ask me when I began to dance, I reply In my mothers womb, probably as a result of the oysters and Champagne. ~ ~ In Europe we thought of wine as something as healthy and normal as food and also a great giver of happiness and well being and delight. Drinking wine was not a snobbism nor a sign of sophistication nor a cult; it was as natural as eating and to me as necessary ~ ~ Food and wine. Decide which is the soloist, which the accompanist. ~ ~ More die in the United States of too much food than of too little. ~ ~ I am allergic to food. Every time I eat it breaks out into fat. ~ ~ As for food, half of my friends have dug their graves with their teeth. ~ ~ For a couple of days after chemotherapy, food tastes really bland, even the best foods. I have not been sick, but have been a little tired. I have not lost any weight. ~ ~ I am on a seafood diet. I see food and I eat it. ~ ~ If food is your best friend, it is also your worst enemy. ~ |
