~ It is neither wealth nor splendor; but tranquillity and occupation which give happiness. ~ ~ If you wait for the perfect moment when all is safe and assured, it may never arrive. Mountains will not be climbed, races won, or lasting happiness achieved ~ ~ And this activity alone would seem to be loved for its own sake; for nothing arises from it apart from the contemplating, while from practical activities we gain more or less apart from the action. And happiness is thought to depend on leisure; for we are busy that we may have leisure, and make war that we may live in peace ~ ~ Procrastination is one of the most common and deadliest of diseases and its toll on success and happiness is heavy. ~ ~ Guilt, though it may attain temporal splendor, can never confer real happiness; the evil consequences of our crimes long survive their commission, and, like the ghosts of the murdered, forever haunt the steps of the malefactor; while the paths of virtue, though seldom those of worldly greatness, are always those of pleasantness and peace. ~ ~ All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast. ~ ~ Nothing flatters a man as much as the happiness of his wife; he is always proud of himself as the source of it. ~ ~ If a person's basic state of mind is serene and calm, then it is possible for this inner peace to overwhelm a painful physical experience. On the other hand, if someone is suffering from depression, anxiety, or any form of emotional distress, then even if he or she happens to be enjoying physical comforts, he will not really be able to experience the happiness that these could bring. ~ ~ If one's life is simple, contentment has to come. Simplicity is extremely important for happiness. Having few desires, feeling satisfied with what you have, is very vital: satisfaction with just enough food, clothing, and shelter to protect yourself from the elements. And finally, there is an intense delight in abandoning faulty states of mind and in cultivating helpful ones in meditation. ~ ~ Even those who wish to find happiness and overcome misery
Will wander with no aim nor meaning
If they do not comprehend the secret of the mind-
The paramount significance of Dharma. ~ ~ The more various our artificial necessities, the wider is our circle of pleasure; for all pleasure consists in obviating necessities as they rise; luxury, therefore, as it increases our wants, increases our capacity for happiness ~ ~ Happiness is a long walk with a putter. ~ ~ Rob the average man of his life-illusion and you rob him also of his happiness ~ ~ There is no such thing as real happiness in life. The justest definition that was ever given of it was "a tranquil acquiescence under an agreeable delusion"--I forget where. ~ ~ Pleasure can be supported by an illusion; but happiness rests upon truth. ~ ~ To love is to place our happiness in the happiness of another. ~ ~ Romance and novel paint beauty in colors more charming than nature, and describe a happiness that humans never taste. How deceptive and destructive are those pictures of consummate bliss ~ ~ There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved ~ ~ To love is to take delight in the happiness of another, or, what amounts to the same thing, it is to account another's happiness one's own ~ ~ Drama is theater, life, an escape from life, happiness, and sadness all rolled into one. ~ ~ They need to worry and betray time with urgencies false and otherwise, purely anxious and whiny, their souls really won't be at peace unless they can latch on to an established and proven worry and having once found it they assume facial expressions to fit and go with it, which is, you see, unhappiness, and all the time it all flies by them and they know it and that too worries them no end ~ ~ Worry doesn't help tomorrow's troubles, but it does ruin today's happiness. ~ ~ Happiness is a warm puppy. ~ ~ Plenty of people miss their share of happiness, not because they never found it, but because they didn't stop to enjoy it. ~ ~ Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance and order and rhythm and harmony. ~ ~ The secret of happiness is to admire without desiring. And that is not happiness. ~ ~ Happiness... consists in giving, and in serving others. ~ ~ Happiness is the absence of the striving for happiness. ~ ~ Sanity and happiness are an impossible combination ~ ~ Happiness is not so much in having as sharing. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. ~ |
