~ Injustice boils in men's hearts as does steel in its cauldron, ready to pour forth, white hot, in the fullness of time. ~ ~ Progress is the injustice each generation commits with regard to its predecessors. ~ ~ Let us have compassion for those under chastisement. Alas, who are we ourselves? Who am I and who are you? Whence do we come and is it quite certain that we did nothing before we were born? This earth is not without some resemblance to a gaol. Who knows but that man is a victim of divine justice? Look closely at life. It is so constituted that one senses punishment everywhere. ~ ~ The fundamental rights of [humanity] are, first: the right of habitation; second, the right to move freely; third, the right to the soil and subsoil, and to the use of it; fourth, the right of freedom of labor and of exchange; fifth, the right to justice; sixth, the right to live within a natural national organization; and seventh, the right to education. ~ ~ Those who today still feel a sense of impotence can do something: they can support Amnesty International. They can help it to stand up for freedom and justice. ~ ~ Few tragedies can be more extensive than the stunting of life, few injustices deeper than the denial of an opportunity to strive or even to hope, by a limit imposed from without, but falsely identified as lying within. ~ ~ Charity is no substitute for justice withheld. ~ ~ We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream. ~ ~ Sir, I say that justice is truth in action.
~ ~ Justice is itself the great standing policy of civil society; and any
eminent departure from it, under any circumstances, lies under the suspicion
of being no policy at all.
~ ~ History is not the story of heroes entirely. It is often the story of cruelty and injustice and shortsightedness. There are monsters, there is evil, there is betrayal. That's why people should read Shakespeare and Dickens as well as history ~~ they will find the best, the worst, the height of noble attainment and the depths of depravity. ~ ~ Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress. ~ ~ Where there are too many policemen, there is no liberty. Where there are too many soldiers, there is no peace. Where there are too many lawyers, there is no justice. ~ ~ The cruel irony is that abortion has been presented as something that would set a woman free. This brings to mind the gypsy in Verdi's opera Il Trovatore. Outraged by the count's cruel injustice, she stole his infant son and, in a crazed act of vengeance, flung him into the fire. Or so she thought. For, in turning around, she discovered the count's son lay safe on the ground behind her; it was her own son she had thrown into the flames. Abortion can present itself as glittering liberty, a defiant way to cast off the shackles of injustice. That illusion lasts only until you realize who it was that you threw into the flames. So the second point to make when trying to persuade is that abortion hurts women; it does not deliver on its promise to liberate them. ~ ~ Revenge is a kind of wild justice, which the more a man's nature runs to, the more ought law to weed it out. ~ ~ For humanity has moved forward to an era when wrong and slavery are being displaced, and reason and justice are being recognized as the rule of life. ~ ~ A man's vanity tells him what is honor, a man's conscience what is justice ~ ~ Look at the Justice Department, it's full of Jews...The lawyers in government are damn Jews ~ ~ But aesthetics is not religion, and the origins of religion lie somewhere completely different. They lie anyway, these roses smell too sweet and the deep roar of the breaking waves is too splendid, to do justice to such weighty matters now. ~ ~ The Justices are currently considering a case, argued last month, which seeks to extend the writ of habeas corpus to al Qaeda and Taliban detainees at Guantanamo. ~ ~ The world sees a great and ongoing injustice. They want a just Israel. They see an Israel that occupies and is clearly unjust, and they believe they should do something. We should thank them for this from the bottom of our hearts. ~ ~ We need to guarantee equal rights and civil rights and say that, here in America, workers have the right to organize - women have the right to choose - and justice belongs to everyone regardless of race or gender or sexual orientation. ~ ~ We must remember that any oppression, any injustice, any hatred, is a wedge designed to attack our civilization. ~ ~ Whenever a separation is made between liberty and justice, neither, in my opinion, is safe. ~ ~ Philanthropy is commendable, but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice which make philanthropy necessary. ~ ~ The sad duty of politics is to establish justice in a sinful world. ~ ~ Children are innocent and love justice, while most adults are wicked and prefer mercy. ~ ~ If a seperate personal Paradise exists for each of us mine must irreparably be planted with trees of words which the wind silvers like poplars, by people who see their confiscated justice given back, and by birds that even in the midst of the truth of death insist on singing in Greek and saying, eros, eros, eros. ~ ~ Mere human beings can't afford to be fanatical about anything. Not even about justice or loyalty. The fanatic for justice ends by murdering a million helpless people to clear a space for his law-courts. If we are to survive on this planet, there must be compromises. ~ ~ Reason and justice tell me there's more love for humanity in electricity and steam than in chastity and vegetarianism. ~ |
