~ When I read great literature, great drama, speeches, or sermons, I feel that the human mind has not achieved anything greater than the ability to share feelings and thoughts through language ~ ~ Literature is a luxury; fiction is a necessity. ~ ~ Romance is the poetry of literature. ~ ~ The trade of critic, in literature, music, and the drama, is the most degraded of all tradesî ~ ~ Literature is the immortality of speech ~ ~ Literature is a luxury; fiction is a necessity. ~ ~ The duty of literature is to note what counts, and to light up what is suited to the light. If it ceases to choose and to love, it becomes like a woman who gives herself without preference. ~ ~ Literature is news that stays news. ~ ~ Literature is the question minus the answer. ~ ~ Literature could be said to be a sort of disciplined technique for arousing certain emotions. ~ ~ In literature, as in love, we are astonished at the choice made by other people. ~ ~ Literature is analysis after the event. ~ ~ Literature is my utopia. ~ ~ Literature was formerly an art and finance a trade: today it is the reverse. ~ ~ Literature is the effort of man to indemnify himself for the wrongs of his condition. ~ ~ Literature is the orchestration of platitudes. ~ ~ Literature flourishes best when it is half a trade and half an art. ~ ~ Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become. ~ ~ The decline of literature indicates the decline of a nation. ~ ~ Literature is where I go to explore the highest and lowest places in human society and in the human spirit, where I hope to find not absolute truth but the truth of the tale, of the imagination and of the heart. ~ ~ Literature is strewn with the wreckage of those who have minded beyond reason the opinion of others ~ ~ Literature is the immortality of speech ~ ~ Bad literature is a form of treason. ~ ~ Literature is made upon any occasion that a challenge is put to the legal apparatus by conscience in touch with humanity. ~ ~ Literature is the thought of thinking Souls. ~ ~ Literature is an avenue to glory, ever open for those ingenious men who are deprived of honours or of wealth. ~ ~ Literature, the most seductive, the most deceiving, the most dangerous of professions. ~ ~ To provoke dreams of terror in the slumber of prosperity has become the moral duty of literature. ~ ~ In Canada we have enough to do keeping up with two spoken languages ... so we just go right ahead and use English for literature, Scotch for sermons, and American for conversation. ~ ~ Literature is my Utopia. Here I am not disenfranchised. No barrier of the senses shuts me out from the sweet, gracious discourses of my book friends. They talk to me without embarrassment or awkwardness. ~ |
