The government of the United States is a definite government, confined to specified objects. It is not like state governments, whose powers are more general. Charity is no part of the legislative duty of the government

The way people in democracies think of the government as something different from themselves is a real handicap. And, of course, sometimes the government confirms their opinion

Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys
P.J. O\'Rourke

Our government... teaches the whole people by its example. If the government becomes the lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy
Louis Brandeis

Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those others that have been tried from time to time.

If you want to understand your government, don't begin by reading the Constitution. It conveys precious little of the flavor of today's statecraft. Instead, read selected portions of the Washington telephone directory containing listings for all the organizations with titles beginning with the word National
George Will

Everybody wants to eat at the government's table, but nobody wants to do the dishes
Werner Finck

Our government has become too responsive to trivial or ephemeral concerns, often at the expense of more important concerns or an erosion of our liberty, and it has made policy priorities more dependent on where TV journalists happen to point their cameras.... As a nation we have lost our sense of tragedy, a recognition that bad things happen to good people. A nation that expects the government to prevent churches from burning, to control the price of bread or gasoline, to secure every job, and to find some villain for every dramatic accident, risks an even larger loss of life and liberty.
William A. Niskanen

It's every American's duty to support his government, but not necessarily in the style to which it has become accustomed.
Thomas Clifford

To hear some men talk of the government, you would suppose that Congress was the law of gravitation, and kept the planets in their places.

Democracy is an experiment, and the right of the majority to rule is no more inherent than the right of the minority to rule; and unless the majority represents sane, righteous, unselfish public sentiment, it has no inherent right

Many people say that government is necessary because some men cannot be trusted to look after themselves, but anarchists say that government is harmful because no men can be trusted to look after anyone else
Nicolas Walter

If human beings are fundamentally good, no government is necessary; if they are fundamentally bad, any government, being composed of human beings, would be bad also
Fred Woodworth

Economics is extremely useful as a form of employment for economists

Because of our Congressional committee system, our government is closer to a gerontocracy than a democracy.
Charles Frankel

The gods Grow angry with your patience. 'Tis their care, And must be yours, that guilty men escape not: As crimes do grow, justice should rouse itself.

Men's minds are too ingenious in palliating guilt in themselves

Let guilty men remember, their black deeds Do lean on crutches made of slender reeds.

The guilty is he who meditates a crime; the punishment is his who lays the plot.
Conte Vittorio Alfieri

We could say that meditation doesn't have a reason or doesn't have a purpose. In this respect it's unlike almost all other things we do except perhaps making music and dancing. When we make music we don't do it in order to reach a certain point, such as the end of the composition. If that were the purpose of music then obviously the fastest players would be the best. Also, when we are dancing we are not aiming to arrive at a particular place on the floor as in a journey. When we dance, the journey itself is the point, as when we play music the playing itself is the point. And exactly the same thing is true in meditation. Meditation is the discovery that the point of life is always arrived at in the immediate moment

Meditation here may think down hours to moments. Here the heart may give a useful lesson to the head and learning wiser grow without his books

Cry within. Meditate within. Dive within. Your inner achievements will far outweigh your outer imperfections

Better indeed is knowledge than mechanical practice. Better than knowledge is meditation. But better still is surrender of attachment to results, because there follows immediate peace.

Every moment there is a possibility to be total. Whatsoever you are doing, be absorbed in it so utterly that the mind thinks nothing, is just there, is just a presence. And more and more totality will be coming. And the taste of totality will make you more and more capable of being total. And try to see when you are not total. Those are the moments which have to be dropped slowly, slowly. When you are not total, whenever you are in the head--thinking, brooding, calculating, cunning, clever--you are not total. Slowly, slowly slip out of those moments. It is just an old habit. Habits die hard. But they die certainly--if one persists, they die.

Meditation increases your vitality and strengthens your intelligence; your beauty is enhanced; your mental clarity and health improve. You acquire the patience and fortitude to face any problem in life. So, meditate! Only through meditation will you find the treasure you are seeking
Mata Amritanandamayi

War destroys men, but luxury destroys mankind; at once corrupts the body and the mind.
John Crowne

There, in her den, lay pompous luxury, Stretch'd out at length; no vice could boast such high And genial victories as she had won; Of which proud trophies there at large were shown, Besides small states and kingdoms ruined Those mighty monarchies that had o'erspread The spacious earth, and stretch'd their conquering arms From pole to pole, by her ensnaring charms Were quite consum'd; there lay imperial Rome, That vanquish'd all the world, by her o'ercome; Fetter'd was th' old Assyrian lion there; The Grecian leopard, and the Persian bear; With others numberless, lamenting by, Examples of the power of luxury.
Thomas May

I'm like the most expensive, exotic item on a gourmet menu. People can wonder about the sensuous delights of the dish, but they can't afford such an expensive luxury
Anna Kournikova

A slight daily unconscious luxury is hardly ever wanting to the dwellers in civilization; like the gentle air of a genial climate, it is a perpetual minute enjoyment
Bagehot

We act as though comfort and LUXURY were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us really happy is something to be enthusiastic about.
