~ Jazz is a feeling, more than anything else. It isn't music, it's language... ~ ~ Cherish your visions; cherish your ideals; cherish the music that stirs in your heart, the beauty that forms in your mind, the loveliness that drapes your purest thoughts, for out of them will grow delightful conditions, all heavenly environment; of these if you but remain true to them, your world will at last be built. ~ ~ There is nothing like walking to get the feel of a country. A fine landscape is like a piece of music; it must be taken at the right tempo. Even a bicycle goes too fast. ~ ~ Music is the only sensual pleasure without vice ~ ~ The architect must not only understand drawing, but music. ~ ~ Architecture is music in space, as it were a frozen music ~ ~ Writing about music is like dancing about architecture. ~ ~ Architecture is petrified music. ~ ~ The conductor must make it possible to eliminate himself in the music. If the orchestra feels him doing that, then everything will go well. ~ ~ Music is only love looking for words ~ ~ Where words fail, music speaks. ~ ~ Life is a musical so sing like no one is listening! ~ ~ I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music. ~ ~ Music is the balm that heals the forlorn ache of a distant star. ~ ~ Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart ~ ~ Who hears music, feels his solitude peopled at once. ~ ~ It is arrogance to expect that life will always be music.... Harmony, like a following breeze at sea, is the exception. In a world where most things wind up broken or lost, our lot is to tack and tune. ~ ~ Music is the shorthand of emotion. ~ ~ Temptation hath a music for all ears. ~ ~ I have left almost to the last the magic of water, an element which owing to its changefulness of form and mood and colour and to the vast range of its effects is ever the principal source of landscape beauty, and has like music a mysterious influence over the mind ~ ~ I held a blue flower in my hand, probably a wild aster, wondering what its name was, and then thought that human names for natural things are superfluous. Nature herself does not name them. The important thing is to know this flower, look at its color until the blends becomes as real as a keynote of music. Look at the exquisite yellow flowerettes at the center, become very small with them. Be the flower, be the trees, the blowing grasses. Fly with the birds, jump with a squirrel! ~ ~ For I have learned
To look on the nature, not as in the hour
Of thoughtless youth; but hearing oftentimes
The still, sad music of humanity,
Nor harsh nor grating, though of ample power
To chasten and subdue. And I have felt
A presence that disturbs me with the joy
Of elevated thoughts; a sense of sublime
Of something far more deeply infused,
Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns,
And the round ocean and the living air,
And the blue sky, and in the minds of man:
A motion and a spirit, that impels
All living things, all objects of all thought,
And rolls through all things. Therefore am I still
A lover of the meadows and the woods
And mountains, and of all that we behold
From this green earth, of all the mighty world
Of eye, and ear -- both what they half create,
And what they perceive, will be pleased to recognize
In nature and the Language of the sense
The anchor of my purest thoughts, the nurse,
The guide, the guardian of my heart and soul
Of all my moral being. ~ ~ One should write not unskillfully in the running hand, be able to sing in a pleasing voice, and keep good time to music; and, lastly, a man should not refuse a little wine when it is pressed upon him. ~ ~ Close friends contribute to our personal growth. They also contribute to our personal pleasure, making the music sound sweeter, the wine taste richer, the laughter ring louder because they are there. ~ ~ For me the ideal date would be to drink wine in the backyard under the stars, listen to music and just talk. Then we would eat steak and, later, dessert. If all went as planned, we would save some of the dessert and play with it while making out. ~ ~ The only thing that makes life endurable in this world is human love, and yet, according to Christianity, that is the very thing that we are not to have in the other world. We are to be so taken up with Jesus and angels, that we shall care nothing about our brothers and sisters that have been damned. We shall be so carried away with the music of the harp that we shall not even hear the wail of father and mother. Such a religion is a disgrace to human nature. ~ ~ One is hardly sensible of fatigue while he marches to music. ~ ~ Folk is bare bones music. ~ ~ That folk music led to learning to play, and making things up led to what turns out to be the most lucrative part of the music business - writing, because you get paid every time that song gets played. ~ ~ Stone walls confine a tinker; cold iron binds a witch; but a musician's music can never be fettered, for it lives first in her heart and mind. ~ |
