~ Stone walls confine a tinker; cold iron binds a witch; but a musician's music can never be fettered, for it lives first in her heart and mind. ~ ~ Dancing: The vertical expression of a horizontal desire legalized by music. ~ ~ The truest expression of a people is in its dances and its music. Bodies never lie. ~ ~ Music is no different from opium. Music affects the human mind in a way that makes peoplethinkof nothing but music and sensual matters† Music is a treason to the country, a treason to our youth, and we should cut out all this music and replace it with something instructive. ~ ~ I have always kept one end in view, namely, with all good will to conduct a well-regulated church music to the honor of God. ~ ~ We are big fans of happy music and stuff like that. ~ ~ Nothing is capable of being well set to music that is not nonsense. ~ ~ I'm quite sure that all true professional artists, of every description, in all walks of life, whether their craft is painting, music, sculpture, medicine or anything, have one primary concern - mankind. ~ ~ What do you think an artist is? An imbecile who has only eyes if he is a painter, or ears if he is a musician, or a lyre in every chamber of his heart if he is a poet? How could it be possible to feel no interest in other people, and with a cool indifference to detach yourself from the very life which they bring to you so abundantly? No, painting is not done to decorate apartments. It is an instrument of war. ~ ~ In America, life is introverted, self-absorbed - and so is their music. ~ ~ A real leader faces the music, even when he doesn't like the tune. ~ ~ Cherish your visions; cherish your ideals; cherish the music that stirs in your heart, the beauty that forms in your mind, the loveliness that drapes your purest thoughts, for out of them will grow delightful conditions, all heavenly environment; of these if you but remain true to them, your world will at last be built. ~ ~ Music is essentially useless, as life is. ~ ~ Classical music is the kind we keep thinking will turn into a tune. ~ ~ History, we can confidently assert, is useful in the sense that art and music, poetry and flowers, religion and philosophy are useful. Without it -- as with these -- life would be poorer and meaner; without it we should be denied some of those intellectual and moral experiences which give meaning and richness to life. Surely it is no accident that the study of history has been the solace of many of the noblest minds of every generation. ~ ~ When the music changes, so does the dance ~ ~ A good compromise, a good piece of legislation, is like a good sentence; or a good piece of music. Everybody can recognize it. They say, "Huh. It works. It makes sense." ~ ~ Poetry is music in words; and music is poetry in sound: both excellent sauce, but those have lived and died poor, who made them their meat ~ ~ It is as impossible to translate poetry as it is to translate music. ~ ~ Themes are important to me, but the beats are what catches someone's ear and makes a record a hit, ... The music is more important than anything. You can have instrumental tracks and people will listen to it. But if you put a really good theme to a bad beat, no one will care about it. ~ ~ I walk without flinching through the burning cathedral of the summer. My bank of wild grass is majestic and full of music. It is a fire that solitude presses against my lips. ~ ~ In every art beginners must start with models of those who have practiced the same art before them. And it is not only a matter of looking at the drawings, paintings, musical compositions, and poems that have been and are being created; it is a matter of being drawn into the individual work of art, of realizing that it has been made by a real human being, and trying to discover the secret of its creation. ~ ~ Hip-hop is definitely not what it used to be, which was creative, original music. ~ ~ I want kids of this generation to see that everything is cool, that there's some kind of unity in hip-hop. We all found something that's really important to us, and music is all we've really got. ~ ~ The trade of critic, in literature, music, and the drama, is the most degraded of all trades ~ ~ The drama embraces and applies all the beauties and decorations of poetry. The sister arts attend and adorn it. Painting, architecture, and music are her handmaids. The costliest lights of a people's intellect burn at her show. All ages welcome her. ~ ~ Jazz is... An open-ended music designed for open minds. ~ ~ Regarding jam sessions: Jazz musicians are the only workers I can think of who are willing to put in a full shift for pay and then go somewhere else and continue to work for free. ~ ~ never heard of a jazz musician who retired. You love what you do, so what are you going to do? Play for the walls? ~ ~ The classics are only primitive literature.
