~ It is natural for man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts... For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth, to know the worst, and to provide for it ~ ~ Illusions commend themselves to us because they save us pain and allow us to enjoy pleasure instead. We must therefore accept it without complain when they sometimes collide with a bit of reality against which they are dashed to pieces. ~ ~ Romances paint at full length people's wooings, but only give a bust of marriages: but no one cares for matrimonial cooings ~ ~ You say that love is nonsense....I tell you it is no such thing. For weeks
and months it is a steady physical pain, an ache about the heart,
never leaving one, by night or by day; a long strain on one's nerves like
toothache or rheumatism, not intolerable at any one instant, but exhausting
by its steady drain on the strength. ~ ~ One word frees us of all the weight and pain in life. That word is love. ~ ~ Romance and novel paint beauty in colors more charming than nature, and describe a happiness that humans never taste. How deceptive and destructive are those pictures of consummate bliss ~ ~ You say that love is nonsense....I tell you it is no such thing. For weeks and months it is a steady physical pain, an ache about the heart, never leaving
one, by night or by day; a long strain on one's nerves like toothache or rheumatism, not intolerable at any one instant, but exhausting by its steady
drain on the strength. ~ ~ If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself but to your own estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment ~ ~ How much pain they have cost us, the evils which have never happened. ~ ~ The recipe for beauty is to have less illusion and more Soul, to retreat from the belief of pain or pleasure in the body into the unchanging calm and glorious freedom of spiritual harmony. ~ ~ Pain and foolishness lead to great bliss and complete knowledge, for Eternal Wisdom created nothing under the sun in vain. ~ ~ Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge we make promise only; pain we obey. ~ |
