It is one of the Fine Arts: I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts. ~ ~ If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment. ~ ~ A painting is a symbol for the universe. Inside it, each piece relates to the other. Each piece is only answerable to the rest of that little world. So, probably in the total universe, there is that kind of total harmony, but we get only little tastes of it. ~ ~ Philosophers and aestheticians may offer elegant and profound definitions of art and beauty, but for the painter they are all summed up in the phrase: To create a harmony. ~ ~ Color harmony is just one type of relationship found in a painting. It comes from the nuances of the light, like the atmosphere connecting everything in the subject. ~ ~ Let us first say what photography is not. A photograph is not a painting, a poem, a symphony, a dance. It is not just a pretty picture, not an exercise in contortionist techniques and sheer print quality. It is or should be a significant document, a pene- trating statement, which can be described in a very simple term - selectivity. ~ ~ It takes a lot of imagination to be a good photographer. You need less imagination to be a painter, because you can invent things. But in photography everything is so ordinary; it takes a lot of looking before you learn to see the ordinary. ~ ~ Not everybody trusts paintings but people believe photographs. ~ ~ It takes a lot of imagination to be a good photographer.
