~ With an eye made quiet by the power of harmony, and the deep power of joy, we see into the life of things. ~ ~ The virtue of the camera is not the power it has to transform the photographer into an artist, but the impulse it gives him to keep on looking. ~ ~ Your most precious, valued possessions and your greatest powers
are invisible and intangible. No one can take them. You, and you
alone, can give them. You will receive abundance for your giving ~ ~ I can find no warrant for such an appropriation in the Constitution, and I do not believe that the power and duty of the General Government ought to be extended to the relief of individual suffering which is in no manner properly related to the public service or benefit ~ ~ Liberty has never come from the government. Liberty has always come from the subjects of it. The history of liberty is a history of resistance. The history of liberty is a history of limitations of governmental power, not the increase of it ~ ~ There is no power on earth that can neutralize the influence of a high, simple and useful life. ~ ~ Our country was founded on a distrust of government. Our founding fathers gave power to the people to keep an eye on government. So when politicians say, Trust me, they're actually being very un-American. ~ ~ Who is wise? He that learns from everyone. Who is powerful? He that governs his passions. Who is rich? He who is content. Who is that? Nobody ~ ~ Under the doctrine of separation of powers, the manner in which the president personally exercises his assigned executive powers is not subject to questioning by another branch of government ~ ~ The only maxim of a free government ought to be to trust no man living with power to endanger the public liberty ~ ~ The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg ~ ~ Congress has not unlimited powers to provide for the general welfare, but only those specifically enumerated ~ ~ There are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations ~ ~ An honest man can feel no pleasure in the exercise of power over his fellow citizens . . . There has never been a moment of my life in which I should have relinquished for it the enjoyments of my family, my farm, my friends and books. ~ ~ That the principle and construction contended for by sundry of the state legislatures, that the general government is the exclusive judge of the extent of the powers delegated to it, stop nothing short of despotism; since the discretion of those who administer the government, and not the constitution, would be the measure of their powers:
That the several states who formed that instrument, being sovereign and independent, have the unquestionable right to judge of its infraction; and that a nullification, by those sovereignties, of all unauthorized acts done under colour of that instrument, is the rightful remedy. ~ ~ I consider the foundation of the Constitution as laid on this ground that 'all powers not delegated to the United States, by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states or to the people.' To take a single step beyond the boundaries thus specially drawn around the powers of Congress, is to take possession of a boundless field of power not longer susceptible of any definition ~ ~ When all government, domestic and foreign, in little as in great things, shall be drawn to Washington as the center of all power, it will render powerless the checks provided of one government on another and will become as venal and oppressive as the government from which we separated ~ ~ Whensoever the General Government assumes undelegated powers, its acts are unauthoritative, void, and of no force ~ ~ The government of the United States is a definite government, confined to specified objects. It is not like state governments, whose powers are more general. Charity is no part of the legislative duty of the government ~ ~ Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys ~ ~ Democracy is the only system that persists in asking the powers that be whether they are the powers that ought to be ~ ~ My meditation Is my soul's Most beautiful and most powerful God-manifestation-dream On earth ~ ~ There, in her den, lay pompous luxury,
Stretch'd out at length; no vice could boast such high
And genial victories as she had won;
Of which proud trophies there at large were shown,
Besides small states and kingdoms ruined
Those mighty monarchies that had o'erspread
The spacious earth, and stretch'd their conquering arms
From pole to pole, by her ensnaring charms
Were quite consum'd; there lay imperial Rome,
That vanquish'd all the world, by her o'ercome;
Fetter'd was th' old Assyrian lion there;
The Grecian leopard, and the Persian bear;
With others numberless, lamenting by,
Examples of the power of luxury. ~ ~ We have proved that the true strength of our nation comes not from the scale of our wealth but from the power of our ideals - opportunity, democracy, liberty and hope ~ ~ The impression forces itself upon one that men measure by false standards, that everyone seeks power, success, riches for himself, and admires others who attain them, while undervaluing the truly precious thing in life. ~ ~ You have powers you never dreamed of.
