~ It is not every question that deserves an answer. ~ ~ Truth fears no questions. ~ ~ It is not the answer that enlightens, but the question. ~ ~ He who frames the question wins the debate. ~ ~ Sometimes attaining the deepest familiarity with a question is our best substitute for actually having the answer. ~ ~ There is a cheap literature that speaks to us of the need of escape. It is true that when we travel we are in search of distance. But distance is not to be found. It melts away. And escape has never led anywhere. The moment a man finds that he must play the races, go the Arctic, or make war in order to feel himself alive, that man has begin to spin the strands that bind him to other men and to the world. But what wretched strands! A civilization that is really strong fills man to the brim, though he never stir. What are we worth when motionless, is the question. ~ ~ The question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be. ~ ~ Waste is worse than loss. The time is coming when every person who lays claim to ability will keep the question of waste before him constantly. The scope of thrift is limitless. ~ ~ Those are serious questions of war and peace, of freedom or tyranny, whether or not there is ever going to be a hope of us instilling some democratic systems in a part of the world that frankly is breeding hate and destruction directed right at us. ~ ~ Religion deals in certainties and philosophy deals more in un-answered questions. ~ ~ Being a gentleman is the number one priority, the chief question integral to our national life. ~ ~ It is an open question whether any behavior based on fear of eternal punishment can be regarded as ethical or should be regarded as merely cowardly. ~ ~ Someone once said that every form of government has one characteristic peculiar to it and if that characteristic is lost, the government will fall. In a monarchy, it is affection and respect for the royal family. If that is lost the monarch is lost. In a dictatorship, it is fear. If the people stop fearing the dictator he'll lose power. In a representative government such as ours, it is virtue. If virtue goes, the government fails. Are we choosing paths that are politically expedient and morally questionable? Are we in truth losing our virtue? . . . If so, we may be nearer the dustbin of history than we realize. ~ ~ Life is a quest and love a quarrel ... ~ ~ Questions are fiction, and answers are anything from more fiction to science-fiction. ~ ~ Most people have come to prefer certain of lifes experiences and deny and reject others, unaware of the value of the hidden things that may come wrapped in plain and even ugly paper. In avoiding all pain and seeking comfort at all costs, we may be left without intimacy or compassion; in rejecting change and risk we often cheat ourselves of the quest; in denying our suffering we may never know our strength or our greatness ~ ~ The male stereotype makes masculinity not just a fact of biology but something that must be proved and re-proved, a continual quest for an ever-receding Holy Grail ~ ~ But there remains the question: what righteousness really is. The method and secret and sweet reasonableness of Jesus. ~ ~ There are two lasting bequests we can give our children. One is roots. The other is wings. ~ ~ A man may fulfil the object of his existence by asking a question he cannot answer, and attempting a task he cannot achieve. ~ ~ As a human being, Bin Laden may have deserved compassion and even forgiveness, the Dalai Lama said in answer to a question about the assassination of the Al Qaeda leader. But, he said, "Forgiveness doesn't mean forget what happened. If something is serious and it is necessary to take counter-measures, you have to take counter-measures. ~ ~ Only the curious will learn and only the resolute overcome the obstacles to learning. The quest quotient has always excited me more than the intelligence quotient. ~ ~ Nagging questions remain: Where is the line between making the most of one's potential and reaching for the unattainable? Where is the line between education as a tool and education as a kind of magic? The line is blurred and that is why when education fails, disillusionment is so bitter. ~ ~ Clever people seem not to feel the natural pleasure of bewilderment, and are always answering questions when the chief relish of a life is to go on asking them. ~ ~ ... on very fairly well with Sergeant Cuff so far.
