~ A young man who wishes to remain a sound atheist cannot be too careful of his reading. ~ ~ There is a note in the front of the volume saying that no public reading may be given without first getting the author's permission. It ought to be made much more difficult to do than that. ~ ~ It is a common temptation of Satan to make us give up the reading of the Word and prayer when our enjoyment is gone; as if it were of no use to read the Scriptures when we do not enjoy them, and as if it were no use to pray when we have no spirit of prayer. ~ ~ The habit of reading
is the only enjoyment in which there is no alloy; it lasts when all other pleasures fade. ~ ~ Reading any collection of a man's quotations is like eating the ingredients that go into a stew instead of cooking them together in the pot. You eat all the carrots, then all the potatoes, then the meat. You won't go away hungry, but it's not quite satisfying. Only a biography, or autobiography, gives you the hot meal.
~ ~ Learning is acquired by reading books; but the much more necessary learning, the knowledge of the world, is only to be acquired by reading man, and studying all the various editions of them. ~ ~ Reading is a lot like physical exercise. Reading is a workout for the brain. ~ ~ In reading the lives of great men, I found that the first victory they won was over themselves...self-discipline with all of them came first. ~ ~ Glory is like a circle in the water, Which never ceaseth to enlarge itself Till by broad spreading it disperse to naught. ~ ~ Reading a good book can be like being on vacation! ~ ~ If you allow yourself to begin posting entries based on what you think someone else wants you to write, you are missing the point of having a weblog. Even more destructive is the number game. It is always flattering to discover that someone else likes reading what you write, but it you begin to focus on gaining the largest audience you can, you will destroy whatever pleasure you may otherwise derive from your work. ~ ~ Never be entirely idle; but either be reading, or writing, or praying or meditating or endeavoring something for the public good. ~ |
