~ Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful. ~ ~ My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness. ~ ~ Religion is to do right. It is to love, it is to serve, it is to think, it is to be humble. ~ ~ We can live without religion and meditation, but we cannot survive without human affection. ~ ~ This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness. ~ ~ If any religion had the chance of ruling over England, nay Europe within the next hundred years, it could be Islam ~ ~ There is no higher religion than human service. To work for the common good is the greatest creed. ~ ~ Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church and State ~ ~ This is one of the paradoxes of the democratic movement -- that it loves a crowd and fears the individuals who compose it -- that the religion of humanity should have no faith in human beings. ~ ~ Passion is universal humanity. Without it religion, history, romance and art would be useless. ~ ~ There is a religion in all deep love, but the love of a mother is the veil of a softer light between the heart and the heavenly Father. ~ ~ I am against religion because it teaches us to be satisfied with not understanding the world. ~ ~ All religions are founded on the fear of the many and the cleverness of the few. ~ ~ Religion has caused more harm than any other idea since the beginning of time. There's nothing good I can say about it. People use it as a crutch. ~ ~ The problem with writing about religion is that you run the risk of offending sincerely religious people, and then they come after you with machetes. ~ ~ Religion is something left over from the infancy of our intelligence, it will fade away as we adopt reason and science as our guidelines. ~ ~ I'm religiously opposed to religion ~ ~ Religion is fundamentally opposed to everything I hold in veneration - courage, clear thinking, honesty, fairness, and above all, love of the truth ~ ~ We must respect the other fellow's religion,but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart. ~ ~ To fall in love is to create a religion that has a fallible god. ~ ~ Religion is the fashionable substitute for belief ~ ~ In religion and politics, people's beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second-hand, and without examination. ~ ~ There is only one religion, though there are a hundred versions of it. ~ ~ Religion is the possibility of the removal of every ground of confidence except confidence in God alone ~ ~ I believe that the very purpose of our life is to seek happiness. That is clear. Whether one believes in religion or not, whether one believes in this religion or that religion, we all are seeking something better in life. So, I think, the very motion of our life is towards happinessÖ ~ ~ Those who say religion has nothing to do with politics do not know what religion is. ~ ~ Each of us in our own way can try to spread compassion into peopleís hearts. Western civilizations these days place great importance on filling the human 'brain' with knowledge, but no one seems to care about filling the human 'heart' with compassion. This is what the real role of religion is. ~ ~ Surely the mischief of hypocrisy can never be enough inveighed against. When religion is in request, it is the chief malady of the church, and numbers die of it; though because it is a subtle and inward evil, it be little perceived. It is to be feared there are many sick of it, that look well and comely in God's outward worship, and they may pass well in good weather, in times of peace; but days of adversity are days of trial. ~ ~ If your religion doesn't teach you the difference between good and evil, your religion is worse than useless ~ ~ Nobody can have the consolations of religion or philosophy unless he has first experienced their desolations ~ |
