~ Respect for the truth is an acquired taste. ~ ~ Property is intended to serve life, and no matter how much we surround it with rights and respect, it has no personal being. It is part of the earth man walks on. It is not man. ~ ~ It is the highest form of self-respect to admit our errors and mistakes and make amends for them. To make a mistake is only an error in judgment, but to adhere to it when it is discovered shows infirmity of character. ~ ~ One should respect public opinion insofar as is necessary to avoid starvation and keep out of prison, but anything that goes beyond this is voluntary submission to an unnecessary tyranny. ~ ~ A good friend who points out mistakes and imperfections and rebukes evil is to be respected as if he reveals a secret of hidden treasure. ~ ~ Great merit, or great failings, will make you respected or despised; but trifles, little attentions, mere nothings, either done or neglected, will make you either liked or disliked in the general run of the world. ~ ~ Don't demand respect as a parent. Demand civility and insist on honesty. But respect is something you must earn -- with kids as well as with adults. ~ ~ Self-respect knows no considerations. ~ ~ Words like freedom, justice, democracy are not common concepts; on the contrary, they are rare. People are not born knowing what these are. It takes enormous and, above all, individual effort to arrive at the respect for other people that these words imply. ~ ~ The best friend of earth of man is the tree.
When we use the tree respectfully and economically,

But hold too tightly, too possessively, and the relationship slips away and is lost. ~ ~ There are countless ways of attaining greatness, but any road to reaching one's maximum
potential must be built on a bedrock of respect for the individual, a commitment to excellence, and a rejection of mediocrity.î
~ ~ Self-respect is the fruit of discipline; the sense of dignity grows with the ability to say no to oneself. ~ ~ Self-respect is the cornerstone of all virtue.
