~ The human spirit sublimates the impulses it thwarts; a healthy sex life mitigates the lust for other sports ~ ~ Each nation feels superior to other nations. That breeds patriotism - and wars. ~ ~ Nations have recently been led to borrow billions for war; no nation has ever borrowed largely for education... no nation is rich enough to pay for both war and civilization. We must make our choice; we cannot have both. ~ ~ To poison a nation, poison its stories. A demoralised nation tells demoralised stories to itself. Beware of the storytellers who are not fully conscious of the importance of their gifts, and who are irresponsible in the application of their art: they ~ ~ Anger is just a cowardly extension of sadness. It's a lot easier to be angry at someone than it is to tell them you're hurt. ~ ~ This administration misled a nation into war by cherry-picking intelligence and stretching the truth beyond recognition. ~ ~ I believe that the very purpose of our life is to seek happiness. That is clear. Whether one believes in religion or not, whether one believes in this religion or that religion, we all are seeking something better in life. So, I think, the very motion of our life is towards happinessÖ ~ ~ We all remember how many religious wars were fought for a religion of love and gentleness; how many bodies were burned alive with the genuinely kind intention of saving souls from the eternal fire of hell ~ ~ To be fond of dancing was a certain step towards falling in love. ~ ~ Tearless grief bleeds inwardly. ~ ~ I tell you, hopeless grief is passionless; That only men incredulous of despair, half-taught in anguish, through the midnight air beat upward to god's throne in loud access of shrieking and reproach ~ ~ Youth is the first victim of war; the first fruit of peace. It takes 20 years or more of peace to make a man; it takes only 20 seconds of war to destroy him. ~ ~ We have a powerful potential in out youth, and we must have the courage to change old ideas and practices so that we may direct their power toward good ends. ~ ~ He who wants to warm himself in old age must build a fireplace in his youth ~ ~ Getting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars. You have to let go at some point in order to move forward. ~ ~ Life is a series of experiences, each of which makes us bigger, even though it is hard to realize this. For the world was built to develop character, and we must learn that the setbacks and grieves which we endure help us in our marching onward. ~ ~ The marvelous richness of human experience would lose something of rewarding joy if there were no limitations to overcome. The hilltop hour would not be half so wonderful if there were no dark valleys to traverse. ~ ~ Experience has shown how deeply the seeds of war are planted by economic rivalry and social injustice. ~ ~ The coward calls the brave man rash, the rash man calls him a coward. ~ ~ A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave. ~ ~ At the bottom of a good deal of the bravery that appears in the world there lurks a miserable cowardice. Men will face powder and steel because they cannot face public opinion. ~ ~ Song of the brave, how thrills thy tone As when the Organ's music rolls; No gold rewards, but song alone, The deeds of great and noble souls.
