~ ìWork is no disgrace: it is idleness which is a disgraceî ~ ~ ìWork is no disgrace: it is idleness which is a disgraceî ~ ~ The frivolous work of polished idleness ~ ~ The frivolous work of polished idleness ~ ~ I never remember feeling tired by work, though idleness exhausts me completely. ~ ~ Work with some men is as besetting a sin as idleness with others ~ ~ The frivolous work of polished idleness. ~ ~ The frivolous work of polished idleness. ~ ~ So, I think thatís the centerpiece of morality: Donít lie. But to do that, you have to go a step further and find out what the truth is. You know, itís easy to say, ìIíll never tell a lie.î But if you say, ìIím going to speak the truth,î youíre going to have to work damn hard to find out what the truth is. The next thing is just plain, old, simple kindness: to other people, to your family. Love for other people. I think thatís another very important part of morality, being genuinely compassionate and concerned about the feelings and well being of other people, especially those that depend on you directly. ~ ~ Compassionate action involves working with ourselves as much as working with others. ~ ~ Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers; pray for powers equal to your tasks. Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle, but you shall be the miracle. ~ ~ A successful work of art is not one which resolves contradictions in a spurious harmony, but one which expresses the idea of harmony negatively by embodying the contradictions, pure and uncompromised, in its innermost structure. ~ ~ Independent of harmony rules, any color 'goes' or 'works' with any other color, presupposing that their quantities are appropriate. ~ ~ Every canvas, even if non-representational, that depends upon harmonious relationships of the three forces ñ color, volume and line ñ is a work of art. ~ ~ All that is not useful in a picture is detrimental. A work of art must be harmonious in its entirety; for superfluous details would, in the mind of the beholder, encroach upon the essential elements. ~ ~ Photography to the amateur is recreation, to the professional it is work, and hard work too, no matter how pleasurable it my be ~ ~ ...words and pictures can work together to communicate more powerfully than either alone. ~ ~ Photography to the amateur is recreation, to the professional it is work, and hard work too, no matter how pleasurable it may be. ~ ~ These people live again in print as intensely as when their images were captured on old dry plates of sixty years ago... I am walking in their alleys, standing in their rooms and sheds and workshops, looking in and out of their windows. Any they in turn seem to be aware of me ~ ~ Using a camera appeases the anxiety which the work-driven feel about not working when they are on vacation and supposed to be having fun. They have something to do that is like a friendly imitation of work: they can take pictures ~ ~ As I progressed further with my project, it became obvious that it was really unimportant where I chose to photograph. The particular place simply provided an excuse to produce work... you can only see what you are ready to see - what mirrors your mind at that particular time ~ ~ Photography to the amateur is recreation,
to the professional it is work, and hard work too,
no matter how pleasurable it may be. ~ ~ Abundance ~ An endless supply of water, trees heavily laden with fruit, a sun that shines every day, seasons in their never-ending cycle, a constant supply of air, an infinite wellspring of love, so many people to share with, an eternal cascade of imagination and creativity, unlimited lessons and growth, much valuable work to do, limitless potential for expanding and opening our hearts, unending forests to wander, evermore books to read and write, a vast mind of thoughts to explore, overflowing goodness, exponential wonder, overwhelming mercy, ~ a copious abundance of abundance to ponder. ~ ~ Most people work just hard enough not to get fired and get paid just enough money not to quit. ~ ~ A good vacation is over when you begin to yearn for your work. ~ ~ Don't skip your vacations and breaks. Spend your breaks meditating, praying or reading. Don't bring work or your laptop with you on vacation. ~ ~ There are two sorts of hypocrites: one that are deceived with their outward morality and external religion; many of whom are professed Arminians, in the doctrine of justification: and the other, are those that are deceived with false discoveries and elevations; who often cry down works, and men's own righteousness, and talk much of free grace; but at the same time make a righteousness of their discoveries and of their humiliation, and exalt themselves to heaven with them ~ ~ I have never had so many good ideas day after day as when I worked in the garden. ~ ~ One of the most important resources that a garden makes available for use, is the gardener's own body. A garden gives the body the dignity of working in its own support. It is a way of rejoining the human race ~ ~ I don't wait for moods. You accomplish nothing if you do that. Your mind must know it has got to get down to work ~ |
