~ Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has. ~ ~ Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote. ~ ~ The tyranny of a prince in an oligarchy is not so dangerous to the public welfare as the apathy of a citizen in a democracy. ~ ~ A book must be an ice-axe to break the seas frozen inside our soul. ~ ~ A nation can assume that the addition of the words "under God" to its pledge of allegiance gives evidence that its citizens actually believe in God whereas all it really proves is that they believe in "believing" in God ~ ~ I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~ ~ Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote ~ ~ Nations crumble from within when the citizenry asks of government those things which the citizenry might better provide for itself ~ ~ With all these blessings, what more is necessary to make us a happy and prosperous people? Still one thing more, fellow citizens -- a wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicities ~ ~ An honest man can feel no pleasure in the exercise of power over his fellow citizens . . . There has never been a moment of my life in which I should have relinquished for it the enjoyments of my family, my farm, my friends and books. ~ ~ Zen is all-inclusive. It never denies, it never says no to anything; it accepts everything and transforms it into a higher reality. ~ ~ Zen in it's essence is the art of seeing into the nature of one's being, and it points the way from bondage to freedom ~ ~ Architecture is frozen music. ~ ~ And so, my fellow Americans: Ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: Ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man ~ ~ I think it is a great error to consider a heavy tax on wines as a tax
on luxury. On the contrary, it is a tax on the health of our citizens. ~ ~ The best defense against usurpatory government is an assertive citizenry. ~ ~ Cultivators of the earth are the most valuable citizens. They are the most vigorous, the most independant, the most virtuous, and they are tied to their country and wedded to its liberty and interests by the most lasting bands. ~ ~ Today the world is the victim of propaganda because people are not intellectually competent. More than anything the United States needs effective citizens competent to do their own thinking. ~ ~ Justice in the life and conduct of the State is possible only as
first it resides in the hearts and souls of the citizens.

Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. ~ ~ By education I mean that training in excellence from youth upward which makes a man passionately desire to be a perfect citizen, and teaches him to rule, and to obey, with justice. This is the only education which deserves the name. ~ ~ In a republican nation, whose citizens are to be led by reason and persuasion and not by force, the art of reasoning becomes of first importance ~ ~ If you once forfeit the confidence of your fellow citizens, you can never regain their respect and esteem. It is true that you may fool all of the people some of the time; you can even fool some of the people all of the time; but you can't fool all of the people all of the time. ~ ~ If once you forfeit the confidence of your fellow-citizens, you can never regain their respect and esteem. ~ ~ Genius is an overused word. The world has known only about a half dozen geniuses. I got only fairly near. ~ ~ Friendship that flows from the heart cannot be frozen by adversity, as the water that flows from the spring cannot congeal in winter ~ ~ Americans have the right and advantage of being armed - unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms ~ ~ Every man, through fear, mugs his aspirations a dozen times a day. ~ ~ Education is the process by which the individual relates himself to the universe, give himself citizenship in the changing world, share's the race's mind and enfranchises his own soul. ~ ~ There is probably no more obnoxious class of citizen, taken end for end, than the returning vacationist. ~ |
