For rigorous teachers seized my youth,
And purged its faith, and trimmd its fire,
Showd me the high white star of Truth,
There bade me gaze, and there aspire.
Simple, sincere people seldom speak much of their piety. It shows itself in acts rather than in words, and has more influence than homilies or protestations. Beth could not reason upon or explain the faith that gave her courage and patience to give up life, and cheerfully wait for death. Like a confiding child, she asked no questions, but left everything to God and nature, Father and Mother of us all, feeling sure that they, and they only, could teach and strengthen heart and spirit for this life and the life to come. She did not rebuke Jo with saintly speeches, only loved her better for her passionate affection, and clung more closely to the dear human love, from which our Father never means us to be weaned, but through which He draws us closer to Himself. She could not say, "I'm glad to go," for life was very sweet for her. She could only sob out, "I try to be willing," while she held fast to Jo, as the first bitter wave of this great sorrow broke over them together.
Faith is never identical with "piety" even if it were the purest and finest.
Singing, "Here came a mortal,
But faithless was she:
And alone dwell for ever
The kings of the sea."
The person who loves for the sake of Allah, and detests and despises for the sake of Allah, and gives for the sake of Allah, is among those whose faith has achieved completion.
Indeed, faithful is the one who - when pleased and glad, his pleasure does not make him enter into sin and falsehood; and when unhappy and angry, his anger does not oust him from the world of righteousness; and when he gains power, his power does not make him commit excess, nor opression, nor make him go for a thing upon which he does not have any right.
I, for one, shall speak about those obstinate Greeks, who are with us and against us, united in faith and divided in peace, though in truth their faith may stray from the straight path.
I think the essential point is a weakness of faith.
You shall receive me when the clouds are high
With evening and the sheep attain the fold.
This is the faith that I have held and hold,
And this is that in which I mean to die.
Don't worry, we're sure to spot Faith first. She's like this cleavagey slutbomb walking around going, "Ooh, check me out, I'm wicked cool, I'm five by five."
"Five by five?" Five what by five what?
See, that's the thing. No one knows.
I have spent 32 years fighting so that every American can believe whatever they please. ... What I tell you this morning represents my faith.

Something will continue on beyond ourselves. Something will bring meaning. Every moment is an act of faith. The nihilist denies faith; but belief in nothing is a faith in itself. Our faith may be strong or it may hang on the thinnest of threads, but we need it to go on. We hold on to the faith that there is a reason to wake up, to get out of bed and participate in life. The religious and spiritual find faith in God, the secular have faith that the methods of science will prove true time and again, that the universe will not suddenly change under their feet. We are all drawn on by a faith, whatever form that may take. We have faith that there is truth, beauty, and some kind of meaning. Most of all, we have faith in ourselves, that we can see the truth, and embrace it. |
