~ Innocence is the weakest defense. Innocence has a single voice that can only say over and over again, "I didn't do it." Guilt has a thousand voices, all of them lies. ~
~ Shame is closely related to guilt, but there is a key qualitative difference. No audience is needed for feelings of guilt, no one else need know, for the guilty person is his own judge. Not so for shame. The humiliation of shame requires disapproval or ridicule by others. If no one ever learns of a
misdeed there will be no shame, but there still might be guilt. Of course, there may be both. The distinction between shame and guilt is very
important, since these two emotions may tear a person in opposite directions. The wish to relieve guilt may motivate a confession, but the wish to
avoid the humiliation of shame may prevent it. ~

~ To what gulfs
A single deviation from the track
Of human duties leads even those who claim

And find it, till they forfeit it themselves! ~
~ Wickedness consists in the very hesitation about an act, even though it be not perpetrated. ~
~ Guilt is present in the very hesitation, even though the deed be not committed. ~
~ Guilt is a timorous thing ere perpetration; despair alone makes guilty men be bold. ~
~ Thoughts cannot form themselves in words so horrid As can express my guilt. ~
~ Let no guilty man escape, if it can be avoided. No personal consideration should stand in the way of performing a public duty. ~
~ Whatever guilt is perpetrated by some evil prompting, is grievous to the author of the crime. This is the first punishment of guilt that no one who is guilty is acquitted at the judgment seat of his own conscience. ~
~ All good men and women should be on their guard to avoid guilt, and even the suspicion of it. ~
~ The sin lessens in human estimation only as the guilt increases. ~
